driving with one wheel/tire/axle off the ground

It's an M353 that I bought from Ft. Lewis a few months ago. Yes, it uses the same lug pattern, and I'm planning on running the same wheels/tires. But aside from an absolute emergency, I'd rather not have to leave the trailer behind. I'm trying to locate a 12ft Uhaul-type aluminum box to set...

driving with one wheel/tire/axle off the ground

Spare tubes are great, but what do you do when you blow-out a sidewall? And don't tell me it doesn't happen, or that it's not likely. That's not the point. I'm just trying to provide for one more 'what-if' scenario and I don't see what it could hurt to have a couple of extra brackets bolted to...

driving with one wheel/tire/axle off the ground

Don't want to weld on these frames. Whatever I come up with will bolt onto the frame. Rather than having to wrap a chain around the axle though, I will probably weld-on some type of heavy-duty anchor-point. I'm thinking that will most likely be a couple of tabs that I can slip a bolt through...

driving with one wheel/tire/axle off the ground

I'm sure that would work in a pinch, but that's not really how I like to do things (I'm a product designer/professional tinkerer). I'm down to improvise an make-do when we're out in the middle of nowhere (and I've done a lot of that), but this is just too easy to do 'right'. I knew exactly what...

driving with one wheel/tire/axle off the ground

Looks like we're both wondering about the same thing. I would like to better understand what the issues are here, because I'm not really seeing what the problem is/might be and I thought I understood differentials pretty well. Hell, I wrote an introduction to gearing and differentials article...

driving with one wheel/tire/axle off the ground

I think we've established that this idea will work, at least in concept. So I'm going to design some brackets and chain mounts. I'll post-up my CAD files for you guys to take a look at before I get parts cut. Then we'll see how they work. If they work as well as I think they will, I would want...

driving with one wheel/tire/axle off the ground

Wow. This is a lot to respond to. Here goes- I would have to shuffle tires. If I've already used the spare, I'd have to take one good wheel/tire off of mah deuce. The way I'm building/packing/traveling, space is at a premium and spare tires DO take up a lot of space. I haven't decided yet. I...

driving with one wheel/tire/axle off the ground

OK, maybe that was my fault for not explaining myself better. Have we cleared that up? Do you understand what I'm talking about now?

driving with one wheel/tire/axle off the ground

I'll never go anywhere? Well ****. I don't know what to do then, because I've already started moving out of my house and putting everything into storage. I'm planning to do some extensive traveling, and will be living out of this vehicle full-time for the next few years. I really don't...

driving with one wheel/tire/axle off the ground

That's exactly what I'm planning on doing. Running it as a super-singled 6x6. I'll have one spare, and will use that if I get a flat. If I get a second flat, that's when I'd need to chain-up the axle. Sorry, was I unclear about that?

driving with one wheel/tire/axle off the ground

Oh jeez. Seriously? I've got an idea that I think I can make work. What I was asking is whether it has already been done/figured out, or if there was something I was overlooking. Otherwise, yeah, I'm going ahead with this.
  12. jesusgatos

driving with one wheel/tire/axle off the ground

    Yeah, super-singles.
  13. jesusgatos

driving with one wheel/tire/axle off the ground

Well I think a 14.5 spare would fit, but I might end up going with 15.5's and I'd rather use that space for another fuel tank anyway. The only spare I'd have would be carried on the trailer.

driving with one wheel/tire/axle off the ground

OK, here's the deal: It's not about changing the tires, it's about having to carry spares. I'm building an expedition-type motorhome out of an M109 and I'm going to be traveling through some really remote areas, unsupported, for extended periods of time. I'll be towing a modified M353 trailer...

driving with one wheel/tire/axle off the ground

So I'm on my own, but there's no reason why this wouldn't work? OK. I'm going to give this some more thought and will post back with whatever I come up with.

New 15.5x20 Michelins Beating The Crap Out of Me!

Oh, just welded to the inner half, huh? I haven't seen the wheels, but wouldn't have guessed that would be strong enough. I guess they are 5-tons... Are those yours? Where did you get them?

    M109 Versus M185

    Ah, got it. Thanks.
  18. jesusgatos

driving with one wheel/tire/axle off the ground

Oh, that's GREAT. I would like to figure something out so that I could chain-up either axle though (so I don't have to change a bunch of wheels/tires) and I'd rather not have to remove the wheels/tires (because then I'd have to carry them somewhere else). I'd think that the military would have...

driving with one wheel/tire/axle off the ground

Oh, sorry. I should have said that I was specifically thinking about a singled-out truck. Of course you're right about a truck with duals. Probably right about chaining-up the whole axle too. Hadn't really thought about that.

    M109 Versus M185

I can't get the link to the old forum to work, can't find anything searching, and I'd like to know too. What are the differences between these trucks?
