    Towing Safety (Please Read)

Let's not forget that armoured vehicles - like the Ferret in question, are often loaded rearwards, though I do see your point when towing a big old flappety Army truck, the rear canvas would kind of act as a parachute.

    smaller steering wheel

Steering wheel and horn (5t) While we are talking steering wheel removal, has anyone replaced the horn button - 5 ton is not the same as a deuce (bought one, tried it, didn't fit, sold it)? My truck is missing everything from the button to the pickup down in the engine bay - I have a...

    Towing Safety (Please Read)

No, so long as you have enough slack before tightening that you can tighten without using a 6' scaffold pipe (cheater bar/tube). It is possible to just use the binders - if the tie down points - trailer and load(vehicle) are at the right distance apart. However, often the binder handle will...

    Towing Safety (Please Read)

Very interesting - have to file that one along with the FM's and TM's. HOWEVER - this document and test is for rail transit, with which there are vastly different factors than for a trailer on the highway. Yes the forces may be greater when crossed, but they should no way approach the safe...

    Wrecker parts info

pic from post #2... looks like there are four sets there - which would be about the top end of requirement for the weight of the truck. Can't see the pins too well, there would be a load. Could fabricate these, but getting the "cast steel" look would be tricky.

    Wrecker parts info

Ground anchors Sean - I had the same thought, they are very similar in function to the British set up for ground anchors (though actual construction is different - pressed plate with holes and folded shackle ends vs cast), however I'd like to know what Ron was refering to. Perhaps they were...

    Oshkosh HMMWV upgraded suspension TAK-4

...so does it come with a bigger rubberband to cope with all that extra tire! ...and extra driver training to stop the "hooo raaahs" from tipping them over?

    Tan CARC part number

I also get one of those "404 network error" type messages from this link. Hmmmmpf! :-(

    Tan CARC part number

Went to S-W today, guy said that number is a unique to customer/store reference, the only way it can be of help is to provide the store location/ph# so that my S-W guy can call your S-W guy and talk specifics. NB - that number in my S-W store relates to a specific commercial customers funny...

Need length of cable (wire rope) on the M108 crane

Just to clariffy a point here, has anyone ever tried to wind on beyond the single grooved layer? Is there room between boom and jib? There was another post thread which stated that even "real" cranes (not wreckers) have grooved drums - for the first layer, but then wind on hundreds of feet...

IT'S ALIVE! er, sort of. M543 resurrection

Should be a fun project.... Naaahhh - only if you tell people. I mean, it's hardly like they reinvented the wheel every generation now - is it..?..! I won't tell if you don't

    WWII Tank retriever scraping

Chain drives Yup - I was unceremoneously informed of that when I told my mate about the truck. But thanks very much for the added clarification - at you told me what I was incorrect about - not just that I was wrong! None the less, what is to become of the crane...? Cheers.

8 weeks and still no insurance!

Insurance sorted! Having originally got a written quote for $68 a year from JC Taylor, they rejected the application, sent everything back with a letter saying "Oversize trucks and trailer tractors are not eligible for our program" though when I questioned the next paragraph: "Please resubmit...

    WWII Tank retriever scraping

Sterling HSC 330 also ran the same rear end - they made heavy wreckers (15 ton) for the Navy in WWII. I stir the pot a little to see if the parts are helpful, I know someone who has both a Sterling and a Pacific.

Gillespie / Rapco Paint Samples / Colors

Not to throw a wet blanket on your "thank you" party, but for the uninspired, uninitiated and altogether misunderstood, can someone point me in the dirrection of matching the fine examples of numbered colors to an era, conflict, camo pattern, TM or elsewhere that would let me know which color is...

    Any suggestions on bumper?

Chain n tree NB. Put a block of wood in the "C" part of the bumper so that the chain 'loop' doesn't dig into the flanges, it will also stop the chain from slipping... If you need the bumper to go up a little, then the tree end of the chain needs to be higher than the bumper or 'viki verki'.

    M 816 outrigger oops.

Yup - all out on the floor. Awaiting wirewheel, flap disk and acid treatment. Not sure how I am going to derust the middle of the body tubes - that's a long way in. The screw part is hand tight on all four - that's a result in it'self. What pics did you want to see? I think the truck looks...

    Any suggestions on bumper?

Yeah thats a pretty simple fix - as said... little tug with a chain from a tree/another vehicle... Mine on the other hand, dents in the front flat part, rope "burn" and split on the radiused lower middle section, drivers side bend: stressed overbent/nasty crease - restraightened'ish - way over...

    Deuce bed on M-818

May be the way to go 'till you realise you really do need that 5th wheel, but it will give you time to see if you can accept the higher bed... On the other hand, I think I would slot the bottom/front of the bed, so that the it slides past and around the fifth wheel, keeping the outsides and...
