Thanks very much. I spoke with Charles at mseriesrebuild.com. He has a replacement starter that is keyed or push button activated and he said there is no gear mesh issue. I will try that.

The starter on my M37 was grinding since I bought it last fall. This week no joy - turns out the nose of the housing was cracked :(
