Thanks Harleyd
I just might try that, I've seen it done on aircraft starter generators that have been dropped. On a positive note our power was restored while I was out filling the water tank. So I have more time to troubleshoot.
Mike
Hi everyone, so the power goes out with the recent storm and my MEP 004a is doing what it did las Feb. After I start it, while holding up the start switch to flash the field, all I get is a grinding starter. I believe we narrowed it down to the speed safety switch last time. I removed the...
Great Vid!
:!: Be careful will 'ya? You took a pretty good poke there Sewerzuk! I'm glad that was not your last video, I'd hate to see you get injured or worse.
Real interesting and I learn something with everyone you post. Thanks again for a great job and congrats on bringing another one back...
Flawless....
Hey Sewerzuk, I finished the conversion last Saturday, everything worked out perfectly. I ended up spending more time cutting that dog-gone bussbar than I wanted to because I couldn't find my Dremel tool.
I still have an issue with flashing the field, but it's all oil pressure...
Ken, that's what I was planning to do, I just have to find my Dremel tool!
Thanks for the generator tutorial at your webpage, I don't have enough time this morning to go over it all, it will have to wait for work.

My Connection Board
Sewerzuk, I went out and started the conversion tonight. My set seems a little different than yours, my buss bar is bolted underneath, it's going to be a pain to cut it. If I remember correctly yours is on top of the board. I took a couple of pics to show everyone.
Thanks...
Thanks PeterD & Sewerzuk!
As soon as I got home, I pulled the throttle halfway out, checked the overspeed reset (yes that's what I was referring to) disconnected and reconnected the canon plug and fired her up. Starter dis-engaged properly and the frequency meter went straight to 62 HZ. I...
Reset switch?
Thanks Sewerzuk, I will give that a try when I get home from work today. I'm worried that I messed something up, the throttle control was all the way in and since there is no tach on this, I left it there for half an hour while I checked for leaks. I'm thinking of installing an...
No Field Flash
Well, I went out today to do some more checking on the set. When I tried to flash the field, the starter would just grind on the flywheel, and I couldn't flash the field.
For some reason the starter is engaging while the engine is running and I push the switch up, I tried it a...
Load Bank
I need to go to Flint and source some used electric water heaters and drying machines to make a load bank for the new set.
Maybe I could set up a hot tub in the barn with the gen-set powering it outside, just for maintenance reasons, of course.
Seriously though, one of my concerns is...
Standalone meter
Hi Sewerzuk, I do have a Fluke here that can check the freq, my fingers were getting too cold out there so I gave up for the evening. We've got a pretty stiff wind blowing out here and I can't fit the set into the barn without removing the stacks.
I'm pretty happy with the...
Thank You
I'll meter that out when I get home from work today. I think the gage is functioning because it does register, it just falls off as the rpm reachs steady-state. The transducer sounds like the culprit.
Mike
HI everyone. I just purchased this set, and thanks to Sewerzuk's videos, I was able to get it running in no time at all.
I do have a question/issue. After the start and flashing of the field, I get voltage output on the gage, but the frequency meter starts to rise on start then when it reaches...
John,
I'd worry more about getting insurance for the 5 ton. I went through hell doing that and it still cost me 800 a year just for liability.
The insurance policy is written as " commercial for personal use" from Farm Bureau, no one else would touch anything over 10k empty
weight...
