The M101A1 is a great choice for a full size camping and bug-out trailer. I've had several smaller trailers, around M416/Canadian M101 size, and find myself both running out of room and never taking them on anything more that fire-trails.

I disconnected the plug that runs to the towing vehicle at the junction box/cover on the trailer a-frame. Simply disconnect the M-connectors.
I've purchased some male M-connectors and a standard 4 pin trailer wire. I've also swapped out the 24v for some 12v bulbs.

In California you'll need an SF97 if you're going to register the trailer "as-is" because the trailer has never been registered before.
Another route you might take (and the one I'll likely do for my new-to-me m101a1) is to use parts from the trailer to create a "special construction" home...
I made my first purchase, an M101A1, with GL in late December. They helped fixup the mistakes in my EUC before submission, and my EUC was approved only 19 days later.
