mine had same sound, was the air compressor. it was leaking at the head and the unloader on top of compressor. just mix up some dawn and water and squirt it on the compressor top and watch for bubbles. i replaced my compressor through napa and the knock is gone. as well as air leak.
concur on rebuild as well. make sure you get "cummins shop manual C series engine" "bulletin no. 3810275-00 9/86. its step by step take apart and rebuild instructions and pics. kinda like a haynes or chitons manual. take head to machine shop for rebuild, and send out injectors for rebuild or...
