I have spend a lot of time dealing with thin aircraft aluminum. I don''t know how thick your aluminum is on the mule, but here are several suggestions.
1. Patience. Aluminum is easy to destroy.

There are several F-104 Starfighters, (the "rocket with a man in it" ) based at St. Pete/Clearwater Airport in Florida. These were designed purely as supersonic interceptors during the cold war. They could sustain Mach 2. I believe that they are still occasionally flown at air shows.
The sad part is that only you will know the hours you put into his changeover. ( and perhaps your wife). It's been an amazingly fast and relatively painless changeover... at least from the user's point of view.

There is not a lot inside these alternators... the real trick to rebuilding is to keep track of all the insulators GM added to keep the negative side of the alternator isolated from the case
