    Tore winch down due to jumping out of engagement at winch. Yoke does not slide on shaft without tapping pretty hard with hammer. No corrosion present. Seems to be an issue with the 2 keys inserted on shaft. Machinist looked at it and said you should be able to freely slide yoke into locked...

    Finally some decent replies to my simple question. I know cable safety as I have run friction cranes on my job sites when operators weren't available (i'm 53 and run about everything out there). Yes the "dogs" were worn and a friend who owns a welding shop is resurfacing them for me.

    As I engage the winch to just pull the vehicle along all is good-vehicle slowly being pulled. Get inside and apply a little brake pressure and the clutch lever on the winch jumps out of gear. Have lubed the shaft area where the clutch lever is connected to said shaft. Am puzzled?

    Get the cable out, lock the spring loaded drum lock in place, pull the handle to "in", put it in gear, shaft turning, shear pin new--nothing. Only way to make it retrieve cable is go out front and pull hard on the lever and if there is any resistance you can't keep it pulling cable. And yes I...
