There was definitely something in the crank that wasn't oil... Looked like muddy water, or something.
Engine isn't seized. I changed the oil and all filters and tried it... Sputters, blows smoke, but hasn't started.
I'm pretty sure I need to crank it some more and replace the oil before...
Yeah, that is the thread, thx!
Anyway, the good news is I have power - came on while I was tinkering.
A few more questions, besides the ones about bypassing the oil pressure and high temp sensors.
On each of the cylinders below the fuel injectors there is a terminal with a spade connector on...
I had posted a topic about my genset a few months ago, but I can't find it and I'm posting from my phone...
I'm having trouble starting my MEP-003....
When I follow the starting procedure I get black smoke and it chugs for a few seconds, then dies...
Suggestions from prev thread were that it...
The electrical supply house that sold it to me said it was rated to 50A. I will check the printing on the sheathing when I get home though -- I told them I wanted 50A rated wire. I'll be quite PO'd if they ripped me off.
It is all academic at this point since the generator doesn't run yet, but...
8-4 SO is rated at 50A / 600v... 10kW is ~52A @ 120v.
Should be fine if I am not running at max capacity all the time.
Would 6-4 be better?
Yes, it would. However it is not necessary for my purposes and a lot more $. This is temporary until I can fund hard wiring and a permanent install.

I'm not planning to run the electric stove... :)
I will just run the stuff I need to be basicly comfortable. Can do without laundry for a few days and cook on the grill. Load shouldn't be 10k, so I think I'll be OK with 8-4... I thought about 6-4, but the $$$ was adding up fast.
Plus, I had...
First off, thank you all for your suggestions / guidance.
At this point my diagnosis efforts are on hold. To get all my vehicles into the garage I had to push the generator into a corner and I don't want to try starting it when it is indoors in a confined area and fuel may be squirted around...
Air flow is set to normal / summer.
Not sure how to check the high pressure fuel side... I purged the filters, so the lift pump is working... I can hear it prime and slow down during the start sequence.

I have a MEP 003A I'm trying to get going which I purchased from gov surplus in the spring.
Where I am now the engine runs for ~1 min, blows black & white smoke when running, then stalls. I bypassed the high temp and the low oil pressure switches with a jumper and tried bypassing them...
OK... Thanks for all the feedback and suggestions... That makes me slightly more hopeful this thing isn't a lost cause and will be operable with a bit of TLC.
I did get the units off the car trailer today. One made it onto a set of dollys, the other just to the garage floor (I needed to get...
Hi All -
I just purchased 2x MEP-003A units from GL.... Picked them up earlier in the week. When I was able to get my hands on them I think I found some indicators which suggest one of these units may be an expensive paperweight (maybe fixable, maybe not)....
I've been reading through the...
