Nice work, zak!! Nice tribute to an old work horse.
The M715 series by Kaiser was supposed to fill that niche during the Vietnam war, but they were garage queens. My old M37, a rebuilt 1950 model, got me home every time, even after being dunked in a canal once.
Pardon me if I am off-base, I've never even touched an M1038. I'm a bit old-school, my active military days ended in 1970 and my civilian experience on military vehicles is limited to my M109A3 and my M923A1. HOWEVER I am an expert (self-declared) in junkyard-shopping and working on old 4x4s...
They certainly did nice work! Is that a right hand steering wheel?
Why, though, did they keep that the Tornado engine? That's what killed the 715 and caused the Army to rebuild M35s for Vietnam.
I have noticed that my 7200 gets pretty hot, so I place it where it has a lot of air around it and not in the sun; no problems.
Please elaborate on how you use the distilled water. I have 2 dead, dead batteries, one is 9 years old and one is 6 years old. Both have fluid over the top of the...
RE Brake lights
You have the very old ones which are terribly small. I drove my 109 from the auction site in Ft. Riley, KS in the rain and about got run over.
MY ADVICE get a pair of newer ones and put them on. The wire numbers are the same and they will bolt right onto the brackets. Look on...
GOT IT STARTED!
I am well known for finding the hard way to do something. Last fall I charged up the batteries until each showed 12 volts no load (plus a little). When I tried to start it, it made a loud "CLUNK" and the voltage (according to the dash meter) went to zero.
Big Mistake: I...
Happy trails (off road) to you. As you can see by my avatar I have an M109 which I bought in 2007 to turn into an off-road camper. It, too, is a '66, BUT it is non-turbo. It has a hard time getting into high gear at 5280 ft. elevation, so I won't be taking it to the mountains. Yes, I worked...
Don't pull any significant power off of just 1 battery to get 12v. It will unbalance the discharge levels and put excessive current through the other battery.
GET A CONVERTER. They aren't as expensive as a battery replacement will be and you can put a lot of other stuff on it.
Looks like you are on the way. My slip ring didn't have the screw, or even a hole where it might have been. Yours must be a later model than mine. Mine is a '66.
If your bearings feel good, don't open them up. Even though it doesn't move on the shaft, it is called a "slip ring" in the...
Okay, I think I understand what you have. You may be in for a replacement of the column, like I was.
The wire (25) goes down the column and is supposed to be fastened to the center shaft. You are going to have to take the whole column out to fix this. You apparently have the wheel off, or...
I went through exactly the same thing and wound up getting a pull-out column because of some bad bearings in my old one. There are two ball bearings, one at each end, between the housing and the solid center shaft. SEE MY INSTRUCTIONS IN...
Guys, as the owner of an M923A1 that's been rode hard andput up wet, this seriously worries me!
The only time I have ever had a vehicle exhibit symptoms like this was with an F100 and there WAS something wrong with it and it WAS dangerous. After trips to 2 major front end alignment shops a...
Besides the weight issue, and it IS real, if the trailer has recently been towed with air hooked up, its brakes may be locked up by the relay valve. The purpose of the relay valve is to set the brakes if air is lost while traveling. Emergency air is provided by that small tank under the...
It is not my intension to start a pi**ing match about who knows what about what has happened to a surplus truck, but at the risk of getting a bit wordy, I would like to comment on what people assume has been done to their truck before they bought it.
There is no way you can know what has been...
I lost the low gear pack on M923A1 in -20 degree temperatures. I subsequently found out that my truck did a tour in Afghanistan and that the government puts 15W40 oil in those transmissions. I called Allison for advice an the first thing the engineer I talked to said was "GET THAT GOVERNMENT...
It might be too late, but DON'T pay for an SF-97. In Colorado if you seriously modify it, you can license it as a "homebuilt". I did that with an M101, but I had to have a state trooper verify it and give me a VIN number.
I have 2 M105s that I registered using an SF-97 on each one. Army...
Best penetrant I have ever used, bar none!! We call it peanut butter.
Advice, be easy on sharp starts, the rear axles are a bit weak. Our battalion in Vietnam went through them like you wouldn't believe. Loved that truck, though. It always got me home and took a couple of slugs and a little...
