Hello,
I have an M1079 LMTV with a blown engine stuck in Elko, Nevada.
Weight: 18k lb
Length: 22 ft
Height 11'7", but the tires can be let down to reduce a bit.
Width: 8 ft
I'd like to get it back to Salt Lake City. I can assist with loading/unloading, but it will need to be winched onto...
I don't have pictures, and my truck is a few hundred miles away. It might be below 3:00. Is someone trying to build a case that Cat should pay for our engine failures?
Current engine is probably not rebuildable. Working on replacement options.
I can snag a picture whenever I see the truck...
3116 Engine year: 1998.
Engine serial number: 7AG07853.
approx. position of the union on the block: 3:00 - no pictures, but a replacement was easy to align and install.
has yours broke: yes - caused engine failure.
is yours leaky presently: no
Geopen - you are correct in identifying the oil line that broke.
NDT - What is the recommended correction for the driveshaft vibration? I've heard people balance them, but if the issue is spline wear, that doesn't seem sufficient.
SausageGuy - Any recommendations on how to find a reasonably...
Hi guys - I'm trying to figure out the best resolution to a catastrophic failure I recently had on my M1079. The truck is an A0 with a mechanical CAT 3116.
While driving down the highway, the engine had a vibration-fatigue failure on an oil line to the governor. This caused the engine to...
The box sways too.m as its mounted on springs. IMO, a pass through is almost impossible given the amount of relative motion the two will compartments have.
I wanted a pass through for a while, but with a center bench seat and the food down bed that we'll eventually have in the cab, it was...
The roof is very sturdy with aluminum braces at regular spacings. The trick will be figuring out how to mount into all of those.
This past week, I had a max of 12 people on the roof at a festival - all standing on the back 2/3 of the roof due to solar panels on the front. We had maybe 1800lb...
Steve,
I have an M1079, so same family. Looks like you have quite a few of these axles stocked up!
What do I need to check on my truck to know if they're compatible?
I'm looking to do a swap of the differential gears ets and not the entire axles - I don't have the facilities to drop and...
After reading 153 posts about the differential swaps, it seems I'm pretty late to the party.
Are there anymore of these axles/differential gear sets lying around? Is it worth calling any of the wreckers/scrappers that had them before, or is everyone out?
Anyone on the site have some they're...
NDT,
What noise is this? I've got a growling noise above 35. Been searching for a while for a solution. It happens more when I'm off the throttle than it does on the throttle. Is this axle noise mild, or would it fill the cab with a growling noise?
QUOTE=NDT;1772663]Oh yes. This problem...
Same thing happened to me. I ordered the plugs locally from Freedom Truck and Trailer in Salt Lake 801 961-8332. I'm sure they'd love to see you some as they came in a box of 10 or 12 and I only bought one.
From the Parts List, it's PN: 1850T 124. I think that directly translated to a Meritor PN.
Suprman - I've been wondering how to adjust the air ride for the cab. Actually, my understanding is that it's air leveling. As I read the manual, you can adjust the leveling valve to correct any left-right lean. My ride is rather bumpy - obviously this isn't a luxury vehicle, but there are...
Yeah - from what I've heard, it's not advised to try to adjust much on the engine without proper training. I haven't dug into it at all to condider the validity of the statement, but I hesitate to mess with mine.
EDIT: to answer your question: I don't know where to get better 3116 manuals.
Mainiak - there's a test in the TM called the "driveshaft hinging test". Calls for a max of .020" play in the splines you're referring to. Sounds like you're over that limit. TM recommends to replace.
Gearhead - a bit of googling led me to the link below. A Pyro is an Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) Pyrometer (Pyro) - high exhaust gas temps can indicate potentially hazardous situations for your turbo or engine.

Great find!
We have a 1079 for a similar purpose and are also looking at how to expand the seating capabilities. We arrived at two new captains chairs for the left and right and a rear bench seat from an older jeep for the center. I think we're going to have some seat-rubbing by half an inch...
We dug into this on our truck tonight a bit. Greased the zerks for the splines on each drive shaft and also the u-joints on either end of both shafts.
I don't have a mounted dial indicator to perform the Driveshaft Hinging Test, but I used my sense of touch and felt no play whatsoever...
Overdrive - just saw that i never got back to you on my earlier thread. Thanks for bringing the various threads together here. Seems like the next person to do a transmission fluid change will have a much easier time with the background here!
