Progress so far with a lot of help from my gurus & friends -
Tank cleaned out, coated with Caswell plating epoxy folllowing Ray's direction and reinstalled.
Cylinders emptied of water, cleaned, engine released
Head cleaned and machined remounted with the rockers
Injector pump degunked and...
Thanks Ray,
I found the PC mark - it was rusted so a little bit difficult to see - see below.
The gear was still turning but with significant resistance and pushing the cap in was very difficult. So I put some Chemtool into the fuel intake hole and gently shoke the whole assembly from side...
Also the gear on the pump is rotating but you need some amount of pressure to move it - is this normal? Not sure what you meant by "freely".
Trying to avoid opening the IP if possible...
Thanks Ray,
Worked on this last night. The code inside the bellhousing is "B" - is that correct or should I continue rotating looking for "PC". From the TM they are not clear about this but they have a Table 7.1 with different letters...
Hi Guyfang!
Thanks for the tip.
I have checked the following manuals but did not see what you are referring to - did I miss something or is there another TM that I have missed?
TM-5-6115-585-34
TM-5-6115-585-12
Thanks for the tip Ray.

Hi Ray,
Yes it was rusted but honing it made it smooth to touch and the pistons move freely with little effort when you rotate the flywheel. The pictures show some discoloration.
How do I check for stuck piston rings?
Yes, I think if i can put it all back together it will work. I will need continued guidance from you guys.
Thanks for the tip about the kit - Wish I had known earlier - I had bought some of them individually already but I will buy this kit as well. Just for your information that kit is now...
Thank you for the tip Ray C.
I don't think I have been so anxious about checking a "bump" and "slit" before ;). Using your technique below I confirmed that this IP is a Ambac M50 as it does not have the slot.
I removed it and have it soaking in a metal bowl with acetone. I will need some...
So after a few days sitting with the blaster and MMO in the cylinders I used a tool crafted by an extremely skilled mechanic to rock the engine using the flywheel...
I am so pleased that the engine turned with minimal effort but did not do a full rotation because of the rust in cylinder #3...
Where can I find the head gaskets to buy?
I have found the
Valve Rocker Cover Gaskets
EXHAUST PARTS KIT for MEP-002A MEP-003A Military Diesel Generators p/n 155-1473
Onan 0113-0167 Piston Ring Set MEP 003A (not sure if I need them but bought them anyway)
Am I missing anything else...
