Sounds like theres a switch left turned on in the system or something is shorted. I think he was right to bypass those components.
I'm just running two AutoZone common size batteries in my M37. They've given me no hassle. Good cranking every time.

It looks right but I wouldn't trust it. If it is a modern one there are several problems with ones coming over on the boat from China.
I'd recommend going to Peter DeBella or holding out for a NOS or takeoff coil.
