I chased a problem on a 60 KW for months. It ran a week, it ran 5 min, it ran a day, it ran 20 sec, it ran 2 weeks, and so on. Then shut off. You have a problem in the set. Its not going to go away. Its not going to fix itself. Sooner or later, its going to drive you crazy. You need to find it.
Your battery charging alternator is not putting out, or the FU-1 fuse is bad/missing. The set should run on just the battery charging alternator. Says so in the TM.
Is there no Military base near by? Do they still have auctions at DRMO? I think they still do here in Germany. Everything is on line, with pictures. A cable could be found there in scrap.
Mainly because the guy who made it, considered it a toy. He had free rain to loot lots of Nike/Herc equipment, and thought that it would be a good learning experience.

Five Tons use 4 batteries, because starting is a tad more work. And when you are on a hill top, (some would call it a mountain, but after you have seen the Rockies and Alps..........) where it often got down to -25 or -30 Cel, and snow bung hole deep...
We made another battery cart with 4 batteries on it. Had them hooked up, so we could jump off the 5 tons, and use all 4 batteries. If we needed to jump off a gen set, or 2.5 ton truck, we flipped a switch, and a relay cut two batteries out of the system. We could have just used a second slave...
We made a cart. Used battery hold downs to secure the batteries, and took a Slave Plug and mounted it on a bracket. Hooked the Slave Plug to the batteries and then we could use a stink normal Slave Cable. Then later we made a holder for the cable, and mounted it to a bracket. We used wheels...
