Billy, you have described my truck's transmission shifting characteristics perfectly: occassionally it'll go into second good, but usually it won't, whether you start in 1st or 2nd, stopped or rolling, hi-rpm or low.... whatever. the real PITA for me is when i have to start from a dead-stop...

chuck, i think there's a gap between what you are saying and what Tom is saying. when you spoke of slipping the clutch, you also mentioned applying engine throttle. when Tom speaks of not slipping the clutch (as have i), he is just talking about easing the clutch out with the engine at idle...

that's something that you can't measure, whether rolling or stopped. any gear is only going to see the maximum torque that the engine is putting out when the clutch is engaged. however, getting the clutch engaged is the infinite variability. as was already mentioned on this thread several...

my trans is usually quite unwilling to go into 2nd sitting still or rolling. also, it is completely irrational to say that starting in second puts more torque on the input or mainshaft, because in fact, 1st puts the most torque through the trans - period. however, if starting in second...
