Hello I'm new here and have been reading here and there and there is a lot of good information here. I hope I'm not :deadhorse: . I am thinking of getting a m1028 CUCV (1.25ton) with 55k miles. A little rest on the bottom corner of the doors and a couple dents here and there, nothing that i can't live with. I plan with it is to do some pulling (a trailer with 2 ATVs or a small boat) The problem with me not going over and picking it up is the 456gears and 55mph cruising speed. Is there anything i can do to besides swapping the gears out or transmission? The guy that owns it now said he has never driven it over 55mph. stating "55mph is the fastest i like to run it." I would like to run at 60-65mph, but the owner stated i might burn out the gears.

thank you and sorry if this is :deadhorse::deadhorse:

Lift kit and 37" tires, 65mph ok. Swap in a 700R4 or 4L80e with 35" tires (need lift again) and 65 MPH ok. If you want to go 70 75 then a 700R4 or 4L80e and 37" tires with 3.73 gears in the axles and 75mph all day long.

Dont go over 55 MPH with stock tires and gears.

sorry to be such a newbie, but with a transmission swap would i have to change gears in the back? Is there a transmission that would be a straight swap or is there fabrication involved?

thank you again.

If all you are trying to do is increase top end speed, the easiest and cheapest thing to do is increase tire diameter. Taller narrow tires will circumvent a lift kit. You might want to consider 9.00/16 NDT.

The TV cable bracket is a factory part and 6.2 specific. Ebay and junk yards are the logical choices.

You really do NOT need to swap tranny or gears.

Chances are high you won't be going that fast THAT often. YES you can go that fast with 4.56 gears. NO you won't burn up the diff's or the engine or the tranny. Having said that, remember that you ARE purchasing a 25 year old truck and it needs to be well cared for. ANY vehicle that old can have problems in all the areas above IF they have not been well maintained.

Gear Ratio Calculator

also, check your pm's because I sent you a link to a different posting here that I don't want to bring up

been there, done that

LOVE MY M1028A2 dually for sure...

If I drive it 60 mph OR UNDER, I get 15 mpg. IF I drive it at 65 mph OR PULL A LOAD, it drops to 10 mpg

like I said, check your pm's

and for more info on the 6.2L diesel engine

I have been reading for about 8 hours now, so my mind is a little mushy, but is this the bracket?
TCI Auto 376710 - TCI TV Cable Bracket Corrector Kits - Overview - SummitRacing.com.

also have been reading it looking like I'll have to cut the drive shaft, and maybe move the crossmembers.

edit: maybe it would just be easier to change the gear ratio in the back to 4.10?
That is not the TV Cable Bracket for a 6.2 diesel. As was stated above, the bracket is 6.2 specific. It is a factory part that is no longer made. As far as I have found, there is not a store online that makes or sells them, auction sites and junkyards are it.

The TH400 has a 32 spline output shaft. The 700R4 has 27. The easiest way to swap in a 700R4 is to use a 27 spline 208 transfer case and adapter. No expensive conversion parts and it's all bolt up. Otherwise a 32 spline output shaft has to be installed in the 700 to mate it to the original transfer case. this requires a complete tear down of the 700 to install the shaft. You can also use a 27 spline 205 as an upgrade. That case would have come off a TH350, they had 27 spline output shaft.

Respectful Rebuttal to Bob H in Post #16 regarding NDT tread tires -

In 1985 I ordered a brand new K-30 civi Chevy SRW 6.2 diesel. I raised the truck 5" and had my machine-shop buddy build the 20" rims. I was undecided which type of tire to use, however I had access to some new 11.00/20 NDT military tires, so I decided to mount them and run them a few weeks until I could decide on other tires. The first thing I noticed was how smooth and easy the truck rolled and turned. Then after driving it across town to work and back every day for a couple weeks I realized that I had not purchased any fuel, so my mileage had indeed improved. I got to liking the things and decided to leave them on for a while.

Now fast forward to 1989. After 125,000 miles, I purchased my second set of 11.00/20 NDT tires. These were on the truck when I sold it to my neighbor in 1995. That second set of tires were almost worn out, and the truck had 225,000 miles. 10 years, 225,000 miles, and only 2 sets of tires.

2 years ago I purchased my M1028, which was an Arizona National Guard vehicle with only 12,338 miles. I knew that my neighbor had sold the '85 K-30 years ago, however I did not know any details. I ran into him at the grocery store and told him about my new M1028. I almost fainted when he asked me if I wanted those wheels back! He had lowered the '85 back to stock and installed factory wheels and tires in order to sell it easier. He said the wheels, all 5 of 'em, were stored in his barn and I was welcome to them!

So to respond to your comments, I believe the NDT tread pattern provides outstanding traction, economy and value. At 44" tall, axle ground clearance is far greater than smaller tires. The narrow width (12") and rounded profile allows fender clearance with normal trimming. I am running BalanceMasters behind each wheel, which automatically balances the entire wheel assembly without wheel weights. I am completely happy with the truck, wheels, and tires, and will run the NDT's from now on.

Sharecropper,

You told that story once before and I FOR ONE, love your truck.

I would LOVE to do that to mine, BUT it's an A2 dually and there is NO WAY I'm modifying it. I'm keeping it stock.

LOVE YOURS THOUGH.
