Wandering if anyone has done this 1009? I am thinking of doing this swap..
It should be a good fit. A lot of the "Little Debbie" trucks were equipped with 4BT's in front of T400 transmissions.
While not a BT series engine, this little Cummins will work it's way into a Ferd Ranger with a 5 speed behind it sometime in the future.

I one from a frito lay truck, a member of this site had it. I was going to put it m37 but the price of fly wheel ect.. caused me to change my tact. I was just wandering if there was pit fall and general advise for this swap. BTW i going to us 700r4 and 3:73 axleout of suburban..

I'm considering doing the same thing.

I have a complete 4bt/TH400 combo that was going into a M715 project. Never happened.

All I have to do to the M1009 is fab some motor mounts and swap out the output shaft on the tranny.

from looking at theempty engine bay.. the motor appears to practically jump in.. with room to spare.. My only hesitation is the noise and vibration. I would like to use it as DD .. I going to use 700r4 I had in 1009.

Some over on colorado k5 have done it...Seems plenty doable..my best friend put one in a 69 c20...Went in fine..Only drawback it it was a lot heavier than the small block he pulled out..Really squated the front end....Not sure how it weighs complared to a 6.2

I have not done a 4bt but have put 6bt in my 96 GMC with just makeing engine and trans mounts but did use dodge trans. Best mod done to truck so far. Right now i hoping to find a good deal on 24 valve cummins to put in my 09. As far as weight goes the 6bt with auto trans weighs in at about 1900 lbs. Made the front of my 3/4 ton squat down after i removed the 6.5

I have a 4BTA that I am putting in a Willys Wagon. If I had a dozen more it would not be enough. I say go for it! An overdrive trans is almost a must. The ideal gearing is quite different than a 6.2l. A M1009 would be a great candidate in my mind.2cents

I have the adapter, bell-housing for manual trans, starter and vacuum pump that you will have to use . I have a non canted to GM bell-housing adapter . most are canted 15 degrees

Dave I will swap you my th400 crapfor the 4bt and an old dog or two for the flywheel lol.. gimps got my number.
Mr. JUmper of stumps, I plan on using a set of 3.42 out of 3/4 ton burban, ie 44 and 12 bolt. just trying to find the right TC, I have found the part number sourced the 6 lug TC just its 1400 stall.

BTW, the 4BT is about on par with the 6.2, weight wise. 6BT is about 1100-1200 lbs. the 4BT has been known to have a killer vibration at idle, but they're fun little motors. Easy on fuel too! The only difference in the area around the motors mounts. They kinda want to occupy the same space as the power steering pump. Lots of people have done it though.


If you want to go 5 speed, you can use a 2nd Gen Dodge (94-98.5, 12 valve) engine plate, clutch setup, and bellhousing on the 4BT, then bolt up a GM NV4500 with a Dodge input shaft. Then you have your choice of GM transfer cases to use and your clutch selection is only limited by your wallet and power holding needs. This is exactly what I did with my truck behind the 6BT.

You could also use the Dodge engine plate and run a Dodge auto if you wanted. 47RH and an NP205 would be sweet. I just like using mixed and matched, readily available, stock application parts that bolt together in ways that they were never meant to be and marvel as they work in a glorious union of automotive engineering!

Example: 92 Cummins engine, 2nd Gen plate, bell, clutch, 99 GM NV4500 with Dodge input, 85 GM round pattern NP205. Your possibilities are endless!

That kind of makes sence the P van has steering gear mount @ 45 degree with the motor behind it.. I still leaning towards the 700r4 if I cant find more info on the detent cable set up I'll pop for sm465 set up and use gm nv4500.

All right it has started.. The engine at buddys getting the 150hp treatment .. the 3/4 ton burban axle are at the shop being freshing up, bearing seals ect... my check book has taken a beating with all parts.
So the plan is this:
4bt with 700r4 on 3:73 axles 285r16 rims
