on a 5 ton 250 Cummings .
If you jump start it and it turns fires up and running
And you take the slave cable off it the truck shuts down
does that mean the fuel pumps no good???

could that be a fuel shut off solenoid is "on" when powered..then as your battery current is zero? when the jump cables are removed the solenoid "closes" again stopping the engine..just wondered.....

Sounds more like the batteries on the jumped truck aren't doing their job or the battery isolation switch is off. If it starts with a jump the pump's working.

The Cummins in the 809 series trucks use an electric solienoid to engage the engine run mode. That is why you do not need to pull out an engine stop cable like the duece. Turn the switch on you get the engine running turn it off and it quits. These trucks need electricity to run due to that unless that part is bypassed

you can bypass this function by turning the knob on the pump. if you do then to shut it off put it in 5t and slowly let the clutch out against the brake.

Just above that solienoid where the fuel line comes in isn't there a manual shutoffvalve? It should have a push/pull cable connected to it. That way if you over ride the solienoid by turning the knurled screw you have a means of shutting it off manually instead of elecally.

Yes, That is correct. If you turned the screw you are by passing the electric and need to use the Engine Stop cable to cut off the fuel. I do believe that it's just the opposite if you have no power. By turning the screw the engine should keep running after the slave cable is disconnected.
