Long term plan for this truck is to be a MadMax type rig for living in when I retire. 40' trailer for shop/living quarters built on log trailer suspension, so I can take it off road a little. Cab will be a '53 International Metro van body. Anyway, I'm adding a K31 turbo. It's the type found on the 12.7 Detroit 60 and I picked it because it's plentiful and has an integral wastegate I can adjust to keep it under 10 lbs of boost.
So far I've turned up the rail pressure to a little over 200psi, shimmed the governor to 2400 rpm and replaced the injector screens, which were clogging. It made a really big difference. Runs over 900F when I push it at all though, so that's part of the reason for the turbo. It will stick out of the hood 99% for fun and 1% to help cool the intake air.
I'll post pics and video of the progress. Parts are showing up and I should be able to start in the next couple weeks.
