I think they call that style crane an A frame gantry. It is very handy. I bought it used at a place that handles salvage metal that I scrounge goodies from. It is identical to the one sold in the Northern Tool catalog. Harbor freight has something similar. The safety factor alone makes it worth the money.

I have seen those before. Many old farms have a homemade one in a less mobile, heavier form for working on equipment. They even make hydraulic lifts on wheels now, for semis and firetrucks and stuff.
