Nobody believed that he would ever be finished, least of all me.

There were bigger problems, smaller problems, Covid-19 ........ but in the end only one thing counts .......... HE'S FINALLY HERE!!!

Unfortunately, the LED headlights had to be replaced with poorer H4 headlights because they have no European approval number and without a number no successful safety inspection (TÜV).

The wide tailpipes either had to be smaller or had a grille in front of them so that no raccoon family or something like that can move in there......... I decided to destroy living space and just make it narrower, LOL.

Oh man, an old V8 gasser engine couldn't be louder........

The next time there is actually only cleaning and maintenance and a few refinements to do, which is always the case............ and of course it has to be driven.

Great looking M1009. CUCVRUS did a great job, and it sounds like you are enhancing it. I have read some articles about the stringent safety inspections in the EU. I'd be interested in hearing more about what you had to do. I guess that may be included in PART 2. I already saw that you had to replace the headlights. Thanks for the update!

Congrats, one of the nicest looking CUCVs I've ever seen!

I've read about the horror story that is the TÜV... "getting it roadworthy" is more of a commitment to you than it would be to most of us in the States!
Everyone has a story about TÜV. They are about the most unloved folks on the continent. BUT, I can tell a good story about the TÜV. My son bought a Yamaha 650 Drag Star from an American friend of mine. Naturally, it was imported from the States. So my son took it to TÜV. Naturally it would not pass. The German TÜV did not have any tech data for this model. Yes, the Drag Star 650 that was sold in Germany. That they had. But NOT from the States. So my son asked about a special acceptance. OH yeah, that we can do. Costs about twice what he paid for the bike. I wont go into the whole saga. But very complicated. We were about ready to leave, when an inspecter came back in. Old guy. Turns out to be a bike guy. Has about 15-16 bikes at home. He sees no reason why the TÜV can not, just this one time, use the German data to accept this American bike. WE WERE HAPPY! Then he inspected the bike. All good. Another guy came in and started the bike. NO WAY! NO WAY! he shouted. No way will I pass this bike! Its too loud!! And walked out. So the old inspector comes back in. looks around and asks us what the problem is. We explained. So he rolled the bike out and fired it up. He was impressed with the sound! But it was a tad too loud. He had my son ride it around and tested the loudness with his tester. He winced everytime the bike went by. Then, just before closing time he told my son to make one more pass. He then held the test rig against his leg. Looked down at the scale and proclaimed, "Güt! Sehr Güt! and signed off on 109 DB. Everyone went home happy.

Long ago. In another county, I tried to get a car through TÜV. It was supposed to be an "easy" place to get your sticker. I will admit, the car was a wreck. I poured bondo into it by the ton. I hand painted the thing an ugly color. Or rather 3-4 different paints, to cover my "handiwork". Brakes were shot. It never started in the mornings. I parked on a hill, about 10 min walk from the house. And lots more beside that.

I named the car Lucille. She was a 63 VW bug. I just needed a car for a few months, before going to another Duty Station. The inspector pulled Lucille in. Started poking around with a screwdriver. Soon, there were several holes in my poor Lucille. I went off at the mouth, in English. Said things I cant write here. Sadly, his English was way better then my German.

He then really went to work! He punched holes everyplace. Everyplace. Then started taking my car apart. He found so many "Problems" that I was not allowed to even start it up and drive outside to park it. I had to push, and no one was helping. Then he told me to get it off the lot, and before sundown. Driving was out of the question. And he was going to tell the other TÜV stations around the county to look out for me and Lucille. So, I had to get it towed off.

I then took it to the Army inspection station, put a 1/2 gal bottle of Jim Beam in the back seat. Got my Army tags and way gone in an hour.

TÜV and German approval was done by a company, as well as the modifications to the front indicators and headlight conversion
Red rear direction indicators are no longer permitted for vehicles that were first registered after 01.01.1970.
Sometimes you are lucky and find someone who still declares it legal.
Actually there is only one law and regulation......... but wherever people work there is always room and opportunities to do something, to make something possible or not.
........ sometimes you lose and sometimes the others win.......no, that was something else again ....... lol
.......... this time i was lucky and the red indicators in the back are legal now.
I still think there will be one or the other check by the police, in the future.

......... maybe I should always have some coffee and cake with me ...... then it's a bit more relaxed
