Recently purchased this from Todd down at Tank Town. Sorting through a couple of small things (stripped out tee for the rear brakes) but otherwise she's nearly ready for the road! I gather there aren't too many of these state side, and I have some English manuals for the BRDM-2 series, but there's a few things that aren't covered. The launching system is more or less sorted, but I haven't been able to sort out how to retract the AT tubes back into the vehicle. Of course everything is in Russian, but I do have some Russian books coming from overseas that may help...

It's a beast of a thing, and goes well with my Fox! If anyone has any guidance on the controls let me know. There's also more hydraulic controls than the standard BRDM-2 that have me all kinds of confused, if anyone has thoughts on those let me know as well!

That looks like it would be a fun toy to drive. Being able to retract the AT tubes is cool. Being able to stand them up while you wheel down the road - now THAT is where the real fun would be! Might need a co-pilot for that.

Silly questions: Guess you have found the hydraulic pump? Guess you have followed the lines from one end or the other? With the idea of finding the valvebody to activate "raise and lower". Is there an electric PTO to turn on the hydraulics? If no switch, you should be able to hear the whir sound of hydraulic fluid moving... Possibility that a valve in the hydraulics are "deadheading"? Good example on the M1089. Valve off the bottom of the hydraulic tank on that truck will stall the Cat 3116 if it is closed off.

Okay, lots of aimless rambling. Maybe something useful.

The hydraulics are up and working now, the belly wheel retract and deploy, the water jet door cover and associated wave break comes up as well. The other two handles are a bit more confusing. The one at the front seems to serve a function to route the primary hydraulics, without being in one of the two positions, the other two functions don't work. The red one, which seems to be critical due to the color, seems to load the hydraulic system, but I can't tell what its doing at all for some reason.

I have absolutely no real idea and have nothing more than a guess... But, is it possible to follow the hydraulic lines (or electrical connected to the lever that control the hydraulics) to see what is going on?

I was happy enough for a while and then I wanted to know WHY. Turned out that there was a check valve in one of the lines. Plumbed incorrectly, it was "deadheading" into a block wall (so to speak).

Maybe you can follow a few hoses - or maybe figure out something was removed and just plugged to fix?

I'm going to give that a go. The copper hydraulic lines seem to wander off, and then enter bulkheads with no clear picture of where they go next!

Got the brake tee in yesterday, and I think back together. The brake lines were M12x1.0 oddly enough, and the rubber line coming in appears to be the same. Everything seemed to tighten back up, just need to grab one of the kids to bleed the brakes and see if I can get a good pedal again!

Quick update, tag and titled the BRDM and ran out for gas. Good times were had by all. Top speed of approximately 40 MPH were reached. I've been able to retract the missle system, but getting it to run back out under power won't work. I've got a limit switch somewhere in the wrong position or out of adjustment, more looking around for that.

I got the Fox FV-721 painted up nice as well since it's tagged. Have it back to its Berlin Brigade scheme, found a picture from '81 painted that way, thought it would be fun to put it back. 245836942_10101436113435374_5830875595989939228_n.jpg

That Mowag Roland is fantastic! How is it to drive? I've got a Shorland that the previous owner did in all black. I'm thinking of do it in Berlin Brigade as well, I'm fairly sure it was never in Berlin, but why not!

I've owned a lot of wheeled armor over the years and the roland was the easiest to drive, it was like a big Ferret but moved pretty fast and at highway speeds. Sold it about a year ago. Your shorland will look great in BB scheme. Lots of big flat sides to work with. Really like the shorland, give me a ring when you decide to sell it, always wanted one. Think I saw that black one on ebay about a year ago.
