You should go to the paint and restoration corner of this forum and look up Behr paint and the color codes which are posted there along with a Behr paint thread to show results of painted vehicles.

Locally sourced then Behr paint is the easiest to get, and the Federal color code matching is pretty good. The Behr Ultra is supposedly a little less sheen to it, the Behr Marquee is a little more durable, but not by much.

If ordering from the internet then Rapco is the preferred source. Can be had as either gallons or spray cans, one 12 pack seems to be enough for a decent job on a 2 or 4 door HMMWV, but might be a little short on an ambulance body or shelter carrier.

My experience with the two is the Behr Marquee mixed up at my local Home Depot to FS 34094 came out just slightly darker than the Rapco paint in gallon form going through the same sprayer. The rattle cans of Rapco have to be applied heavily in order to match the color I got from the sprayer I used.

One other thing to consider, the Behr is water based, so clean up is easy. The Rapco (made by Gillespie) is oil based, cleanup is a bit more involved with chemicals (Xylene is the preferred method) but gave a slightly better finish in my opinion.

I've used Rapco paint for over 25 years and painted over 15 vehicles. No complaints. None.

Rapco paint 4 gallons to my door was about $190.
At home depot the Behr Marquee was about $55 a gallon. I believe the Ultra was in the $45 a gallon range, so it's all priced about the same.
12 pack of rattle cans Rapco was about $100 shipped.


Best part of the rapco is being able to buy spray cans of identical paint, so when you scratch it up you can fix it immediately if you so desire. Plus oil based paints aren't quite as fussy about oil free surface for painting.

It's the shipping that gets you. Hazmat plus shipping, buying 4 gallons lowers it, but a single gallon it's a lot cheaper to buy local.

Ive used rapco for years. The carc substitute green and brown seem to be a perfect match. The black, though, is not flat enough in my opinion. I found that rustoleum camo ultra flat black is perfect for the black areas

One note I'll make as mine was painted with Behr as mentioned above is that while it scratches easier its pretty easy to touch up.

I also had great success with it painting the soft top and doors. I thinned it 50/50 with denatured alcohol and sprayed two light coats to take the camo soft top and doors to green. It was super easy and a year in has held up excellent.

im still on the fence about the three color camo paint, I really like the solid green but my doors are camo so I’m trying to see about how to paint the vinyl doors.

See my note above yours on painting the soft top and doors. I had really good luck and they've held up great.

I use Rapco as well and have no complaints other than that the gloss is a bit too high for a truely correct restoration project, however the matt finish is much easier to clean than a real FLAT finish.
With that said, in addition to the Rustoleum Camo Ultra flat, I have found that their High Heat grill / stove paint is also a very good match for real FLAT black. It also dries super fast ( great for doing stencils ) and it dries smooth.
