Caterpillar What is this

I was just looking under hood and saw this Looks like a filter should be there but it is dry Can somebody tell me what it is for ??

It's for marine applications where the crank case breather is plumbed back to in front of the turbo. Its where the breather filter if you will goes.On the A3, it does nothing, so don't worry about it.
