Tidbit of info for newbies or anyone who doesn't know, our engines may not reach operating temp in cold weather, so how do you know if its warm enough to run safely? Well I can't speak for all of us, but my turbo unit told me. After sitting for a week, I went out, flipped the battery switch, did my startup procedure, and she fired on the third cycle (28°F air temp). Took about 10 seconds to get a nice, even 850rpm idle, where I engaged the throttle lock and a pair of vice grips just barely squeezing the rod. After about 20 minutes, I started to hear the faintest of turbo whistles, growing into a whine, and then the unmistakable sound that is the C turbo spooling. Now, I panicked because all I could see is my exhaust temps skyrocketing and my truck on fire, all the newbie fears, that were quickly put to rest. Got in, pushed throttle lock all the way in, engine dropped to 500rpm and purred, turbo whistle was present, but only just, constant, and beautiful. Safe to run passed 1000rpm. As I learn more I'll post more here, but this will get you out of the barn and in to action safely should the need arise, just watch oil pressure.
