Correct Tan Color

I want to add a couple things to my M818 so I'm looking for the correct desert tan color to match what is currently on the truck. The truck was depot rebuilt in '06 with a fresh coat of tan carc applied. All of the paint I have used in the past has been Gillespie so I'd like to stick with them if possible. The paint sample (sample of the actual paint) seems to be a bit dark when compared to the truck. The paint was only applied 4 days ago, so it might change shade yet as it cures. That has been the case with the other Gillespie paints I have used. Does anyone have experience with the tan? I would like to use spray cans in this case as the parts are small. I also want to cover the DRMO/GL writings on the hood and bumper so I would like to match the paint as close as possible.
The Gillespie sample I have is 30277 Sand. (see pic) It actually looks lighter when in the sunlight, but still not as light as the truck.

Yikes! That does look way off! I am not able to tell you the correct color code, but my experience with matching paint... If you use 'bucket' paint and a spray gun, you can probably get fairly close by mixing in small quantities of white and yellow, or light almond. without a color matcher to give you the correct amounts the best you can do is mix a little at a time (a light scale will come in handy to calculate the right mix for future reference) spray a test panel and bake it under UV lights for a day and then hold the test panel up to the truck to see which one is closest. Weigh each color separately as you add it to the mix to get the ratio. I know that you said you want to use rattle cans, so good luck finding the right color.
I hope you figure it out. I'm sure somebody knows the color code.

Thanks. The key is to know the carc color/number/name that is applied to the truck. It is the current tan used on vehicles going to the middle east. Yes, mixing paint to get the right shade is doable, but if there is someone thats carries the correct carc-safe color already, it would be that much easier.

I am slowly learning about the mil-specific vehicles and attributes. I have always had an interest in them, and have built/rebuilt/torn apart/etc many many play toys over the years, and am just now learning the differences between all of my civi toys and the mv toys... Hopefully some of my experiences can be of assistance to others while I am gaining a piece of the vast knowledge available here. Ya'll have me wanting more and more a true MV!!! This is a very VERY BAD site for me to hang out on!!! One of these days I am going to get shot when I go home!!! (carrying an MV or two for myself)

I have a deuce that would like to turn tan,but I don't know which tan. 686a looks like it should be the current color from what I've read but it looks dark. Here is a chart that I found, this (FS numbers) along with the website will give you the different colors. My local paint store had an FS paint book and could make any of the colors. Latex, Epoxy, Urthane,flat, semi, you name it.

Just let us know what color it is. I like the photo.

It could be 686 desert sand like my Rover ( click below ), which has more yellow in it then the gilliespie tan

Take a look here. My guess is FS33722. FS33637 is the 686a color.

Note that it is painted with the paint codes referenced in my previous post/link to the other thread. That is the actual paint used for my truck...

go with 686 tan. great color and should match up with what you have no problem, thats what i'm using on my m52a2.. i think the sample you have is the old desert tan. good luck

Does anyone know the history of which tan for the deuce? When and what branch of the service or even where (conflict) it was used? From what I have researched, the 686a Tan is the latest, FS33446, but the trucks painted that color look lighter. Look at benni72 and zak's photos. The charts look like zak's color, the desert tan truck look like benni72's color. My son's tour with the Navy Beachmasters just ended, but he thinks they used the lighter color. FYI, he's in Great Lakes now,where he started. For us the color is a matter of preference, they both look good.

I agree. I guess we've gleaned that '686' desert tan is now FS 33446. But I'm still confused.
Why do the pictures from Olive-drab look like the lighter 33722, but they are calling it the 686, FS33446. Zak's truck looks like the charted 33446 color, a darker, 'gray' color.
Benni72's truck also looks like the lighter 33277 and so does Dan's deuce and Bill's Rover, but they are a different FS #. Where did you guys get your paint from?

My paint is Valspar acrylic enamel. Its a pretty good match to the 686 in spray cans that Rapco sells. It was mixed at Wiltse Auto Paints on Dixie Hwy in Waterford, which is near Pontiac,Mi. He used the 33446 number in his computer and came up with this color. I'm going to see if next summer's sun fades it to a pinkish color before I paint the rest of the truck

As I've heard (second hand) the 686 came in during the persian gulf war ( 1990-91 ), and was based on the British Desert sand color

MVM had a write up on 3-color camo in Dec 2007 issue 124 by Chris Causley. It states that FS#33303 "sand" was the frist color used for desert environments. That changed to FS#33446 "tan" druing the Gulf War. Rapco has Gillespie in FS# 33446 Tan "686" or 30277 camoufflage sand that was used in the old 4 color camo pattern. When I was with the 1st CAV in the Gulf war all our equipment was the tan color. Even when we got back if it was green it got painted the tan. But all the vinly and canvs covers were left green. 2 tone you mite say.
