CUCV-II Northern Europe Reconditioning

hi,
i like to share some pictures and experience about my new "old" cucv-II i bought from warthog.
thank you again for all the effort, trouble and energy you put in, to help me getting the pickup.

the story start when i read the classifieds...
warthog is going to sell his toy for a new project.
cost me some slepless nights.

...always afraid that stonepicker could be faster.
i asked warthog if he would help me with the export and fortunatly he said: yes. YES!
he drove that thing all the way down to the port in tx, just in time to get next vessel.
but the us customservice set the vehicle on "hold" to investigate,
because of the former "property of the us army".
so we missed this vessel and the next one was canceld.
the truck finaly rolled on the 3rd vessel that got a delay too.


here the ro/ro vessel "oregon highway" entering bremerhaven with the CUCV-II on board.

it took almost 2,8 month from delivery in tx to the arrival in germany bremerhaven.

...when i got there to get the truck certainly the batterys drained completly...so i had to wait a little longer.
first pix on the way back home.


the truck runns great.
the custom service disassembled the interior but it was easy to put everything back in place.
we just get one radio station..europe frequences...some good oldies
i ll never forget that great first trip.

time to check all the things that need some overhauling or rebulid.
that truck baldy needed some love.

someone stole the antenna mast on the way over the atlantic.

as you can see on the last pic in the us garvelston the antenna was mounted

Nice truck, and cool that it came from the states. Did they put it in a container or just drive it on? Can I ask the shipping costs? My Onkel in an old Fendt tractor that I'd like to have.

first i decited to clean up the truck up.
the whole inside got a nice patina covering.
before and after.




the bumpers were powder coated, so i removed them for the sand blasting.

the shipping prices are very complex.
if you asking for a quote they don`t give you the total... expect double the price with all the handling in the home port.
shipping (roll on roll off) was not to expensive...800 usd.
but all fees, taxes, service charge and in my case the long storage charges...ill send you a pm if you like to know more.
fendt! great! love them. play`s big role in my favorite comedy over here.

i had to replace the seald beams to h4 beams to meet the european standard :-/


fat based rustproof treatment for the whole body.
pretty nasty
but nessary.


stops the rust with fat
in 3 different liquid levels. the thickest must be heat up.

the 4th step is a coating to cover the fat that constanly works under that surface.

pink was out of stock so i took my next favorite color...desert tan... not realy, it is the old merdc desert sand (fs 30277)
more gray than pink in that color.

time for some new rear lights...the old ones were pretty flat.



both mountings of the sunvisors were broken.

this was like it looks than...

the common 6.5l diesel problems where not waiting too long...
on the 4th day test driving (after a short 20min stop) the engine stalls,
sure in the middle of the intersecton.
running again after cranking 4 times.
same agains after the next 10 min. stop.
i bet there is some air in the diesel system.
after several days working on the truck and not driving it wont fire up at all.
first thing i tryed, like recomendet from serveral diesel experts and warthog i installed a new pmd...no differnce.
i checked all the connectors. looking for loose cable and so on. nothing.
the batteries where almost dead. dryed after cranking 2 times. i replaced them with red top optimas. still not starting.
i opened the water in fuel drain valve, some diesel came out like it should while crankin. so the diesel pump should be ok.
next thing i thougt was to change the diesel fuel filter. the parts dealer said: use only oem ac delco filter. the other aftermarket filter often dissolve and damage the ip, lot of problems here because of the ethernol diesel over here.
so i tryed to change the filter but
i got a wix filter...completed with a ring nut to bolt on the housing... the original filter needed a seperat element nut, that was missing...bought a new one on ebay.
i hope that`s it but i still belive there must be some air leak in the diesel system. i also removed a glowplug to see if some diesel deliverd, unfortunatly not.

today i was very disapointed.
i only wanted to change the cracked door sill

a little surprise was waiting for me

the drivers side was slighly better, yippie!

no chance, extra work...i had to remove the seat bench and the carpet...worked with a steel bruch and a chemical acid phospate to get that brown cancer out of the cabin floor.
