DCC-353-P welder issue

Hi all!

I picked this Hobart welder up recently, have done a few repairs to it such as a blown out capacitor in the voltage regulator and the previous owner wired the new ignition switch in wrong.

The generator voltage regulator was tested, it was good. Motor runs excellent as well, unit has 440 hours

I'm discovering the Gen head itself might be the issue; between the slips rings should read 24ohms resistance but I'm getting 4-8 ohms. Is there a method of disassembling certain parts to clean em up? It's hard to believe that something has failed with that low of hours but who knows.

Or does anyone here have a parts unit? I'd love to get this welder running

Low resistance on the windings is a symptom of a short. If you can take a peak in there see if you have any discolored windings. Not much you can do to fix that unfortunately.

You could pull the rotor and take it to a motor repair shop to see if it can be rewound.

If its broke, you can not make it more broke. Take it apart. Look at it and see if its something easy to fix. If not, then its get it rewound, or have a new door stopper.

@Guyfang Don't know that any "truer" words have ever been said. You really can't make it more broke! I learned how to rebuild my first motor with a core that I carried out of the woods - one piece at the time. 1956 Chevrolet 265 cubic inches. It was old and tired, but with a ratchet and socket, I got it to turn over still in the frame. That inspired me and a several dozen trips out of the woods got it home and a few hundred bucks made it run. Lots of hours and back then, BOOKS were the source of information...

I learned about a really neat tool called Plastigauge and a lot of other things in that process.
