Deuce injector pump questions

After replacing the fuel tank/pump/filters on my 89' M35A2C (it fell pray to old gov biodiesel) we thought that it might start again (ran great when first bought). Flip the power switch - pump humms - no fuel at the injector pump. I know the pump works since it came off a running duce (engine died). Removed the fuel line at the first filter - with the pump running only a trickel of fuel coming out. Removed the line at the tank - 80 plus psi air hose on the line and out pops leaves - yes plant matter. The fuel line was left open to the atmosphere when looking for a new tank. Some little critter must have made his home in my duces fuel line.

Now the question - We have lots of fuel at the injector pump now - no fuel going to the injectors. At the point where the fuel line enters the injector pump is that another pump/filter ?

Have you pulled the side cover off the IP to ensure the fuel cutoff is moving? The rod has a tendency to stick in the "off" position if left that way for a while even if the outside rod appears to be pushing in when you push the fuel control cable in. Verify that, it'll only take 10 minutes or so and report back.

side cover

Today my dad removed the cover and the mechanism was frozen in the off position- with alittle wiggling it came loose. Now the question - will the loosening fix the problem or do we need to dig deeper into the pump?

Spray it with something like WD40 or a cleaner/lube and call it good.

It must be VERY FREE. Taking it apart by cutting the safety wires, then carefully pulling it out might be needed. Careful, fuel is behind the lever assembly AND there is a small pawl which likes to get lost.

If this lever isn't free to move on its own after removing the stop plunger cover, it cannot idle. The injected quantity is proportional to how far the lever moves, it is the sole control of injected quantity.

I have seen one pump that shucked its button on the bottom of the plunger, that will also lead to a no-start, no-run condition. This required removal of the hydraulic head but was otherwise an easy fix.

Before pulling it fully apart, try a blast or two of Berryman B12 Chemtool. I used it on an Ambac injection pump which has the exact same metering mechanism, not surprising because Ambac is American Bosch. MEP-002A and 003A generators use this Ambac pump.

Yes !!!! it runs again

Today was a truly good day - the engine started. We did find 2 more small problems before it started. The ball valve on the engine mounted fuel filters was stuck closed - fixed it. The 3 way fitting towards the front of the pump that has a sliding orifice arraignment - that was stuck also. After fixing those and cranking some more smoke started coming out the exhaust and then it came to life. Thanks for the help.
