Deuce PTO Question

Hey all,
A friend just gave me a Spicer forward reverse 2 speed PTO. I was told that it came off a 5 ton but he didn't know what series truck it came from.

The Data Plate as seen:
Spicer

ORD 740958 D model (the last character on the number is not legible)

173 With a star stamped here>

I was wondering if this will fit the 2.5 ton Trans??

The 2.5 ton and 5 ton pto are not interchangeable.

Ok, next question. The same friend that gave me the PTO also has a nice winch that he said I could have. Its not a Legit Deuce winch but it is basically the same configuration,(manually driven and about the same dims as the deuce winch) and can be mounted up front with a little fabrication work. So since I am going to have to buy a PTO anyway, do you think it would be best to go hydraulic or to find a deuce winch PTO and set it up the way most deuce winches are? Pics of what? The PTO or the winch? The PTO is definitely the wrong one. The pics on post #3 proved that. I will try to get a few pics of the winch tomorrow.

You my have to go hyd on the winch depending on if you can get the driveline to work with PTO drive. There's not a lot of wiggle room for the driveline in the radiator and bell housing area.

However you power the winch, you're going to have to have a PTO or figure a way to mount a engine driven pump.

I heard from a vendor on this site of a separate power take off attachment to the M35a2 transmission the output spline shaft which faces the rear, perhaps this is the drive used for the auger attachment. Perhaps it could be used to drive a hydraulic pump?

I'm going to look at the winch tomorrow and I will take pics. (Lol I need to check the forum to see how to post pics.) From what I have seen on the winch, it has a keyed shaft coming out the lower back right side(worm gear type winch). I have to build the mounts and all. I was thinking to get a shaft for a standard deuce winch, it would attach to a shaft mounted under the winch, then run sprockets with chain or pulleys and V belt up to the input shaft of the winch. This is only one idea. I need to take many measurements of both the winch and front of the Deuce before I can be certain it will work at all. We shall see. This will be a future project. Lol I need to get my truck paid for and to my house first, fix it up, register it, drive it a little, admire it alot, etc. Then I will worry about installing the winch. I'd just go with hyd if I decided to use the winch. It sounds like it's going to be quite a ordeal to get a driveline to it and it won't cost much more to go hyd, by the time you buy all the driveline components.

Ok all, Here is the winch I'm talking about. The frame of it is 21" long by 34.5" wide, and from the base of the frame to the top of the drum is 14". I need to weigh it. Its quite heavy. I could barely get the gearbox end of it to move by myself.(Lol although, that is the heavy end) I don't want too much weight hanging on the front of the truck since they are front end heavy to begin with. I have a way to weigh this thing but I need to get it out of the trailer first. I'm also going to try and find out what its rated pull is.

Dude, leave that junk right where it is. That is an antique winch for a wrecker or tractor or something. Of course it may be worth something, you could maybe sell it and put the money toward a real deuce winch.

I could actually use that winch for a project of mine. Looking at where you are located kills the deal though, shipping would be a killer.

The square on top of the bull gear cover may be stamped with model number and rating . The winch needs to be cleaned up and have the cover removed to check the bull gear -bushings and see how much brass shavings are in the bottom of the case . Some military winches get very little or no use and could be a better deal .

Yeah, It is an old winch, but Tulsa winch Co. makes high quality stuff. Keep in mind, this is just an idea, I'm not for sure that I'm going to put this on my truck. It is in nice shape and its FREE to me if I want it so I thought it was at least worth looking at. I know that the best way to do this would be to buy the proper Deuce winch and be done with it and I am still thinking that's what I'm going to do. Either way, the current owner is one of my best friends and I am going to help him remove it from the shed its in regardless of if I use it or not. Once I get it outside, then I can clean it up and take it apart to check everything out. My biggest concern is the weight of the thing, lol its a heavy sumb%tch. My other negative towards it is there is no form of limiter on this winch. It will either move the truck or tear itself off of the truck and that's not a good thing. So, the standard Deuce winch is still looking like the best option, and with the Fabrication work that will be required to mount this winch, it might just be cheaper in the long run to purchase a standard Deuce winch. ANY winch WILL do that if you use the WRONG shear pin.

Yep you are absolutely right, and that's the thing. I don't think this winch has ANY type of shear pin or load clutch etc. If it does, it must be inside the gearbox or something. I wonder if I decided to try to use this winch, would I be able to do add some type of load limiting device, lol aside from the cable breaking or the winch detaching from the truck. Of course, it would probably be cheaper to just get a deuce winch.
