OK, I've seen disc brakes added to the drive line, like this.

Can this setup be added to the regular braking system to aid in stopping?

I'd call that a parking brake. Offroad is another story.

Most modern rubber tired loaders use that style braking the JD 624Js we use all have that for both service brake and parking brake

Well I was thinking of adding one in the front and one in the back to supplement my braking.

You could certainly use it to stop if your regular brakes failed but as service brakes the long rear driveshaft would probably let go under the strain.

That's a pinion brake setup. Very common in rock crawlers and mud trucks. However they can get away with them since they have welded or locked rear ends. Pinion brakes on a open diff road truck wouldn't be that good of an idea, especially in the rain/slush. Plus you'd overheat a single disc on the road in short order.

I know you can put discs on the deuce Rockwells to replace the drum brakes (I have seen them in the rock crawler mags).....not sure about the 5 tons.

There are big commercial rigs that have discs. One of those set ups might could be adapted.
