That's a pinion brake setup. Very common in rock crawlers and mud trucks. However they can get away with them since they have welded or locked rear ends. Pinion brakes on a open diff road truck wouldn't be that good of an idea, especially in the rain/slush. Plus you'd overheat a single disc on the road in short order.

I know you can put discs on the deuce Rockwells to replace the drum brakes (I have seen them in the rock crawler mags).....not sure about the 5 tons.

There are big commercial rigs that have discs. One of those set ups might could be adapted.
