Drivers Side Rear Wheel Locked Up

I just got a 1985 M1008 back to Oklahoma from Kansas after getting the truck from the Kansas Forest Service. The truck starts up and runs. It did not have a drive line under it so I pulled it up on the trailer with it in 4X4. When I got home and unloaded it the rear drivers side wheel locked up about halfway off the trailer then free up once I got off the trailer. Then when I put it in drive to pull it forward the wheel stayed locked up. When I back up it doesn't lock up it seems to only do it in drive. I have a drive line a friend gave me out from under a 1985 GMC 3500 4X4. I haven't installed it yet but want to make sure the rear end isnt bad before I proceed with fixing some issues. Any idea what this might be or the best way to diagnose the issue? This is my first CUCV. Thanks for the help. I have search around the site and see some people have the issue or the brake sticking. The weather here is not cold at this time if that has anything to do with it.

When you say "drive line" I'm assuming you mean driveshaft? First thing I would do is pull the rear differential cover off and check the gears and carrier. If anything I'm sure it could use a fluid change anyways. Second step would be to pull the wheel and brake drum and check the brake shoes and hardware. I would NOT put the driveshaft on and they to power through it when it sticks.

Pull the axle shaft from the locking up wheel and repeat. If the problem still exists it will likely be wheel hub, drum, brake related. If problem goes away it will likely be gear, carrier issues.

I hope it isn't your rear end? Mine did that once while plowing snow (Briefly locked) then i got half way home and a gear busted threw my pumpkin! Check for metal in the gear lube 4sure, I hope it's a brake.

Just a little update I pulled the axle shaft from the locking up wheel and it is still locked up. I haven't had time to pull the wheel and inspect further. I will keep you posted on what I find. I did notice when I was backing it in my shop to work on it when you barely touch the brakes that wheel locked up even with the slightest brake pressure, not sure if this is related or not.

That might be a good sign. Rather deal with a drum full of mangled parts than a whacked gear set.

I pulled the brake drum and dug into it last night. Both wheel bearing were intact they had some slop in them but had not fell apart. I did not the brake drum and pads had a lot of old oil on them where I assume the seal has leaked. To this point I can not find anything that looks obvious like it should be causing the wheel to lock up. What else should I check? I am going to replace the wheel bearings and seals on that side once I put it back together.

Oil contaminated brake shoes will cause the grabbing brake issue you described.

Would it cause them to lock up solid but only when going forward? They have only locked up once for a short distance in reverse. It lockes up every time in drive.

I have everything cleaned up and will attempt to get the seal and both bearings tomorrow so I can put it back together. I am keeping my fingers crossed this solves that issue so I can move to the next issue.

Just an update it was the rear brake pads. I cleaned everything up and adjusted them and replaced the seal packed the bearing and it spins just fine now. Thanks for the help guys.
