Early vs late NDT tires

I noticed most of my 60's dated 9.00s have a sharp, squarer tread to them. While the newer tires (80's) have the typical round tread pattern. Also, anyone know the reason for the variation in tire pressure? I know the rule of thumb is to go by what the actual tire reads. My 50's TM manual states 45 max PSI, and so do the tires. Yet I hear people here running as much as 70lbs in them even though the fender mark states 50psi max.

There isn't an early/late difference. Two totally different tire types altogether. The sharp cornered oned are NDT's, The rounded ones are NDCC's.

Not necessarily early vs late; the two (squared off edge and rounded edge) are two entirely different tire patterns.

The "squared off edge" commonly seen on older vehicles (the M37 is the first to come to mind) is the NDT pattern.

The "rounded off edge" on our Deuces and such is the NDCC pattern. My T-Hawk 11.00x20s even have "NDCC" printed on the wall of the tire.

EDIT: Dangit Hendersonj, you beat me by a minute!

Another thought; NDT's (that aren't 50 years old) are VERY expensive!

I have some 900s that are not round in the center of the tread, they have three flat sides in the center radius of the tread. I cannot remember if they are Armstrongs, Denmans, or some other old tire. The T-Hawks are much rounder in tread profile and in the center radius of the tire, if that is what the OP is talking about. All the ones i've seen are Denmans and 50+ years old. Wallace Wade makes new ones but they are right at $300 each.
