fifth wheel operation

I have the newer style fith wheel---is the safety pin supposed to stay out when the handle is released---the old style had a lever to hond the pin out--Help---thanks

yes till a trailer is locked in it will stay out.

the pin sticks out about a half inch---I thought they stuck out farther
