Found roofing tar inside a M109 wall (w/pics)

Found a surprise when I was working to remove bad rivets from the exterior rub-runner and fix the rust underneath. I was hoping to grind down the rivets from the inside of the wall, this'll add a degree of difficulty.

Ah well, I guess the truck would be in worse shape if it wasn't maintained at all. Think this was Toole work or the guys at the Elizabethton TN National Guard where the truck came from?

I was restoring a '55 MB 190SL once and found tar paper (roofing felt) under the mat in the trunk. It had molded itself in so well over the years that it was a form fit and looked like it had been melted and poured there at the factory. The only reason that I found it at all was because it had only one spare tire well showing in the trunk but when I looked underneath it had two! But it did a good job of protecting the floor except for the closed off wheel well. It was completely rusted away at the bottom.

My 1966 has the tar on the walls. Mine had never been opened up until now so it's original to the trucks.
I am also after loose rivets and waters leaks! I have a few small holes to patch because of water leaks at the rub rail.

The tar down low is standard to the vehicles. It is thickest down at the bottom channel and if you pull the wood floors out you will even find it on the steel floor.

The 109 body I got on my M818 has quite a bit of rust issues, but it is sound.

I would like to find someone local who could tackle the whole thing. Would be a good idea to use rhino liner on the top.

The TM tell you to use tar, when you replace the rub rail FYI.
