front engine mount replacement

I was able to swap the two rear mounts on my father's 54 M37, but the single front mount is a bit more difficult to get to. The rear mounts were totally shot and we have a new one for the front. Is it necessary to remove the crank pulley and front engine support bracket to get to the lower engine mount nuts? Should I look into lifting the engine with a hoist instead of jacking under the oil pan? Any suggestions to make it easier would be appreciated.
