Gear Oil Info

I know that gear oil is a touchy subject around here, I just wanted to share some information that I have obtained. I have been searching for a good gear oil to suit the needs of the deuce and after about three days of discussing oil with many different oil company technicians I settled on one. I spoke with a technician from Valvoline that recommended their GL-5 MT-1 80W90 Gear oil. They still make an all mineral oil GL-1 also. I was told that they still make the old GL-1 mainly for the demand in being used in older tractors as well as MVs. He said that it works just as well as it always has but the newer GL-5 Is a higher quality gear lubricant and exceedes GL-1 performance. The lubricant we were discussing is formulated to be Yellow Metal Safe ( he added) and would be perfectly fine in the transmission, t-case, and differentials of the deuce. I am only making this post in the hopes that I may help someone else that is wondering about alternative solutions to GL-1. I will leave the Valvoline part numbers for both types of oils. I ordered mine through Oreilly's Auto Parts.

Valvoline # V V70044 : GL-1 TRA Gear Oil Five Gallon Pail
Valvoline # 838 : GL-5 MT-1 80W90 Gear Oil Five Gallon Pail

On another note I spoke with a Tech from Lucas Oil Products and found out that their oil additive is yellow metal safe as well.

NAPA also has their own brand of the GL-5 with MT additives as well in 5 gallon pails.

Thanks for sharing. More is better when it comes to information on our trucks.

I'm not 100% sure, but I am almost positive that the NAPA brand of oil is Valvoline oil.
