I've been looking on GL for years now. I'm tired of watching all the good deals go right infront of me. I want to start bidding on this stuff but dont know where to start. I guess open an account and a paypal type thing? Do they ask alot of info just to open an account?

So after you win an auction, what are the steps? I guess pay via credit card....and then what? Because i know it takes awhile to be able to pick this stuff up.

I live not to far from Ft. Dix...Will they let me make an appointment to go look at this stuff before i bid?

Anyway, i'm looking to suprise my dad with an m1009...i guess they dont let you drive the stuff home, huh? (not that i would want to anyway, some stuff just looks scary!)

I plan on buying alot of stuff off of there. Once i get well known there, will they let me on base without having to wait up to 2 months, or is that just the procedures no matter what.

And lastly (for now) My tow rig is an 86 M1008. Thats the only truck i have with a pintle to pull my flatbed (well...i actually put the pintle on the trailer, so its the only trailer i have with a pintle) do they take kindly to letting MV's on base? Or will they give me a hard time just to be spitefull?

When you bid, you provide your credit card or paypal info. if you win, they go ahead and charge your card/paypal for the amount owed. You dont have to do anything at that point. It generally takes a day or two for them to get around to it, so just be patient. Once they have collected your money they will post your paid invoice and notify you to DL it. Download it and print it out, thats your proof of payment. Call the contact number on the invoice and make an appointment to pick up your item. When you go, you have to go to the visitor center at the main gate, where you will get a visitor pass to get on base. make sure you have your driver's license, registration, insurance card, and paid invoice with you as they will check them and take a picture of you lol. proceed to the GL office from there and they will help you load your stuff. Thats all there is to it, takes maybe a half hour the first time at the visitor center, quicker after that cause you will be in their computer. Normally the whole process takes about a week from when you win the auction to when you take your stuff home. The exception to this is if you win something that requires an EUC. in that case you have to fill out a security approval form that goes thru GL to DOD who has to approve you to receive the item. That can take 60 days or so the first time, sometimes even longer if they get backed up.. I live in Bordentown and buy stuff at Dix quite often....

to answer your vehicle question, you cant drive off a vehicle, you'll need to trailer or tow it. They wont care that your personal vehicle used to be military, but they will care that it is properly registered, insured, inspected etc. Do not speed or anything on base either, the MP's are pretty much zero tolerance for violations there...

I drive my M35A2 to Fort Meade for pickup. No problems. Next time I'll put the boarding ladder out for the bomb dog,the handler had to lift her into the bed last time.

One follow up here, mostly for those the are lurking in the future, or are looking at other GL sites. It seems the GL access rules (at least for my local base) are constantly changing. Over the last 5-6 years it seems to change about every six months or so, going through cycles of tightening and loosening security. Access to get on base for pickup may be as simple as pulling up to the main gate and showing a drivers license, or as complex as having to go through the commercial truck entrance gate 10 miles around to the south from the main gate with the big vehicle X-ray machine, having an copy of your GL appointment (for a short time this also required an escort to the GL site about 3 miles from the commercial gate). At the moment they are allowing access through the main gate with smaller trucks and trailers, but you have to pull over and get a visitors pass from the visitors building, which only requires showing your drivers license and giving an on base destination (in the past this step has sometimes required showing vehicles registration and proof on insurance also) . Rules for driving trucks off site, or towing trailers off site seem to vary from site to site and time to time as well.
