the truck is 85 m1028 maint. body. so all is great but the glow plug resistor .I have 24 volt in what should be coming out of it ?

The wire size is listed in the schematics in the TMs. It's 8ga.(just looked)

From the Appendix E of the TM 9-2320-289-34 manual, Diagram E-7, the feed wire for the GP relay is labeled:
8 RED-2(SXL)
If you look at the chart on how to read the diagrams (first few pages of the Troubleshooting Section) you will see that the label is for informational purposes only (not on the wire).
8 - means it is an 8 guage wire
RED - tells you the wire color
-2 - just a wire number to help label the circuit
SXL - Heavy walled, high abbrasion, cross-link polyethylene cover (275degree)
It's amazing what you can find if you look for it.
