Okay. Long and short of it is I was starting my m1008 on fourth of july evening and heard a distinct metal on metal grinding. Let off the key and the starter kept going, and the metal sound got worse. Pulled keys out, popped the hood and poof went the smoke. I burned thru the battery post terminal and several wires under the hood.

So today I installed my new starter (the old one grenaded at the bell) and replaced all the burnt wires. Went to start it up and the starter wouldn't disengage again. Had to pull the battery cables off to shut her down. And all the wires that burnt the first time burnt again.

Any ideas before i tow it to the mechanic.

Welcome to SteelSoldiers.

Visit the CUCV Wiki at the top of the page of the CUCV Forum. All of the free Technical Manuals are listed there for download. The starter relay part number is there.

http://www.steelsoldiers.com/showwiki.php?title=wiki:Cucv

Then checkout the CUCV FAQ sticky that is just under the Wiki. It has alot of tip/tricks for the CUCV.

The starter relay under the dash is a VERY weak link in the system. The story is it started it life as a heater relay and GM used it as a starter relay.

The points inside are welded together.

Time to replace it or do Doghead's Relay upgrade. (uses a heavy duty relay)

At least you caught it the the second time around.
