Help with identifying these trucks please

Hi I am new here

Can someone tell me specifically what type of trucks these are ?

They have peaked my interest and I want to find more info about them because I might have the opportunity to aquire

I know they are 1962 & 1963 but what model #

They have diesels

M44 series (specific model M35a2 probably). Appears to have the air shift front engagement. From the size of the exhaust pipe, probably a turbo model. Typical fire department paint scheme. Multifuel deuce-and-a-half cargo trucks is my guess.

Hi Doug! I've seen those two trucks on c-list for about a year now. I actually saw them down towards rockaway beach 2 years ago. They have been up for sale for awhile now. Not a bad price for the 2 with the trailer. I would seriously spend some time looking under the trucks for rot. I think during hurricane sandy they were used for rescues. Salt water definitely got in both of them somewhere. Check the axles for intrusion as well.

I looked under the hood and the have turbos, would that make them M35a1 ?

Yeah they have been sitting in my buddies yard for a few years now, one of them has some rot on the front fenders

Being a 62 and 63 would mean they predate the a2 series, although like many they could be upgraded to a2 specs. Both data tags are obviously changed so who knows if the info is correct. Having all those parts from Memphis on one of them I wouldn't be surprised if it had a civilian engine installed, I saw one recently with a 4-53T Detroit.

Detroits would be great, I have a pair of twin turbo 8v71's in my boat

The one with the trailer on top looks to be in better condition

The other has rot in fender and all around the hardtop

Yep those are straight re-motored diesel turbo Cummins and they were not put in by the military, fuel tank is not stock also. Might want to check and see if the trannies were changed also, there is nothing wrong with Cummins I love the one in my 818

Yes no doubt, Cummins are very good motors
and I am sure they wouldn't leak nearly as much oil compared to my dirty 2 stroke diesels in my boat

i will report back with info on the tranny

and more pics!

Welcome to the hobby, and site. Those would be an interesting acquisition for you to start and get into the hobby with. Somewhat unusual as well.

Military trucks don't drip oil....they mark their territory! :lol:

Nice repowers who ever did them did a very good job. Nothing to be ashamed of there. Enjoy your rides.

Hi Folks

Just a quick update, I put these trucks on the back burner for a bit

After searching this site and getting the "bug", I questioned whether those trucks are the right move for me

I would want to upgrade to oversized single wheels and tires, power steering, winch and other goodies

I found this truck for sale but unfortunately I am second in line, the first guy is seeing her next week and will probably scoop her up

I really like the extended cab version with rag top, they don't seem to be too common

Would love to find another, especially since I have some cash now, because it won't be here long, my boat needs a new 10.5kw diesel generator and one Detroit needs two new turbos

Wish I could snatch that extended cab in S Carolina, already had a shipper ready to haul up to Long Island

They're not common at all because that's custom work. If the cummins swap was well done I'd be all over that truck (if the price was right), you could always convert it over to a extended cab later, big tires and a winch are easy to add.
