HMMWV : Changing heater knobs and plate

I'm in the process of stripping and sanding my Hmmwv and need to take the old plate and black knobs off of the heater pulls. I've tried unscrewing, pulling and even loosening the two nuts behind the dash to no avail. Do I have to follow the cables to the end and completely remove the entire thing? Hopefully there is something simple that I'm overlooking.

Thanks, I was hoping to avoid that but oh well. I'll definitely shoot some Houdini on the cables when I have them out.

This has to be one of those "Why the hell did they design it like this" parts. They could have made the knobs twist off but noooooo.
