horn does not work

My horn has never worked, and I found a wire off at the horn, I put it back in place and it still did not work, I removed it and checked it with a multmeter and there is 24 volts on it at all time, pushing the horn button on the steering wheel does not change anything.

The horn button uses the GROUND not the POSITIVE to function. Check the connection at the end of the steering shaft. That is where mine was disconnected.

I accidentally grounded the horn once while installing. Never do that again!!

Mine also had the wire removed from the horn when I first got my truck. I connected it and it seemed fine until one day when I turned the steering wheel it went off and would not stop. Obviously it had been disconnected for a reason. Turns out the wires were frayed inside the steering column and when the wheel was turned they grounded to the column thus sounding the horn. Once I replaced the wiring that ran through the steering column it works fine. I believe if you are getting power to the horn and it is not working, it may be the solenoid that is bad on the horn itself or it is not getting air. Did you have the air pressure built up when you reconnected the wire?

This winter I ordered a new horn kit from Eriks surpplus, I installed it yesterday and it works great

WHERE does the wire come out at on the column, (NOT the button end) ?? My horn quit on the ride home today after camping with some friends. I accidently pulled the wire out too much when I removed the button and now that extry 8" of wire won't go back down the center. I'm thinking I need to pull it back in from the other side of the column, however so far I don't SEE where the wire goes into it. I am BLIND for some reason and must be looking right at it and am over looking it. I know when I ground the wire the horns sound off so I have a bad horn button and will replace that.

Follow the steering colum all the way down to the gearbox, lay under the truck and look up at the gearbox, it comes out the back side of the gearbox, between it and the radiator.

If the wire was disconnected at the steering box end and you pulled the wire inside the steering box, you should see a small round black rubber boot type fitting pressed into the hole at the bottom of the steering box that the wire runs through. This helps keep the wire in place. Good luck trying to feed the wire back through. Will probably have to run a solid stiff wire through and out the other end, then connect the stranded wire to it and pull it back through.

My horn stopped several months after I bought mine,,,strange thing one of the horns unscrewed from the body, so air just blew thru, and no horn sound. I was looking under the hood the next day and saw that it was lose,,,,screwed it back in and the horn worked again.

2 complete m16 cleaning rods work great for running a new wire through the steering collum , just tape your new horn wire to one end and push it through.

I just used a piece of #14 solid THHN wire and connected the original wire to it. Pulled it through and connected back to the plug on the bottom of the steering column. Stranded wire does not work, it is not stiff enough!

Yeppers, found the other end. I never thought to look down at the gearbox. Found the real reason the horn went bad today~ Wire is broken and only like one strand was left. It looks as if this has been repaired before as the wire is not original and has butt connectors instead of the original style. I'll get the real connectors and boots and make it a real repair this time. Thanks to all!!
