KDS Smart start issues

I have an M998 (rebuilt in 2005) with KDS smart start box. The wait light does not come on, fuel gauge isn't work but all other gauges seem to work fine. I can get it to start with starting fluid and it runs fine. I opened the box and see what appears to be a burned diode (see picture). I tested with an ohm meter and get 100ohms. No idea if that is good or bad though. I also tested a couple of the glow plugs and get no reading. Do I need a new EESS or is it just the bad glow plugs? I am worried if I just replace the glow plugs and there is some other issue it will just burn out the new ones.

Not sure if its related but with the key off when I connect/disconnect battery cables I get some light arcing. I do not see that with my M1097.

You need new glowplugs and a new EESS box and never use ether on that engine again that is strictly taboo.

What other option is there to start it when the glow plugs are not working and its 20 degrees out? I generally only use ether to seat stubborn tire beads :)

Try WD-40 instead. No ether, starting fluid. That "diode" that looks burnt is a resistor. From looking at the colored bands on it, it just might be a 100 ohm resistor. It got hot for some reason. Good luck.

BBROYGBVGW. Those of you with some old electronics background will know the meaning. I learned it some 40 plus years ago.

I haven't had any start box issues yet so no experience here but I would try and diagnose it before buying a new one. You already got the box apart so might as well replace that resistor if you can see the color bands on it or find a picture of another KDS board. Hows the rest of the board look? Any idea on what voltage and for how long you are getting power to the glow plugs?

Actually it is BBROYGBVGWGSN
I'm not sure the little jingle would be appropriate to list here, it starts with "bad boys"
The N stands for no band or "now" in the jingle
