L-4 WWII Tactical Radio Question

We are trying to ID two pieces of equipment that are mounted in a Piper L-4 from a WWII photo. The aircraft is carrying a BC-659 radio (not Shown) but still has the factory AVA-20 reel antenna installed.

The two items that are field modifications (probably from a MV) are what appears to be a small battery on the rear shelf, and an inter phone connection box in the left wing root that we cannot identify. You can clearly see the HB-7 head phone plugged in to it using an extension. Any help would be appreciated.

Best Regards,
Steve
