Hey everybody

So, I've always said I didn't want a generator, as I felt my power was so reliable that I'd do more maintenance to a genset than I'd actually use it. But my power has been going out more frequently, and for longer periods in the last couple of years. And the giant storm a few months ago that wiped out Augusta and Asheville had originally been forecast to go right through Athens, Ga., where I live.

A friend of mine has a great setup with his shop and house running off an MEP-003A and I've decided to copy that. And that same friend scored me a great deal on a 003A with reasonable hours and an M116A2 trailer. The genset will need some maintenance to bring it back to my standards, and so will the trailer. No biggie.

Judging from the pictures below, you can tell some of the stuff I'll need.

  • A green vinyl M116A2 cover. This is the cover that goes all the way down to the trailer and has allowances for the wheelwells. Like this:

  • A full set of bows.

  • Extra jerry can mounts and the toolbox seen above. I will probably not restore the trailer to 100% correctness, as I'm probably going to add a larger fuel tank, civilian lights so I can pull it with my 4500 as well as Deuce, etc.
  • An NOS 10-pin trailer wiring connector. This one, the rubber end is rotting.
  • NOS data plates for the genset and the trailer. I already found an NOS id tag for the trailer, the one that has the VIN and such. I'm going to repaint the genset and the trailer and I'd love to replace all the data plates.
  • I think Eastern has NOS brake assemblies for the passenger side, does anyone has NOS drivers side units?
  • If it exists, I'd love to have an NOS gauge panel:

  • I'd love to have a noise suppression kit (ASK – Acoustic Suppression Kit) for this thing. It's going to be out under an awning by my shop and it'll only be 220' from my closest neighbor. If it runs for a day, I can see a neighbor getting whiny. I think the suppression kits for these are uncommon? I don't remember seeing many. I know I could make something, but I have zero extra time in my life. I'd rather just buy something and paint/reinsulate it.

When I get further into the restoration of the units this winter, I'll probably need more but this is what I know of for now.

Thanks

C

I know I would be talking to @Ray70 about his spin on fuel filter upgrade if that set was mine.

The ASK kit has a serious trade off to it. Yes it makes that gen set much easier to live with. But it make maintenance more of a pita. It also can attract mice like a magnet.

Looking forward to you working on the Gen set. If taken care of, that set is bomb proof.
