M1008 Hard Start

I recently got a M1008.. I noticed I was leaking fuel from the pump. All the lines were dry. I ended up replacing the pump with Delphi MF0030. Put new hoses on, replaced the filter, and bled the system. Fired right up. Drove it around everything was good. I went to start it after work and the wait light went bonkers. And it would not start. Looked back at the exhaust and there wasn't any smoke for the first few seconds of cranking. Eventually got it started after a sniff of liquid glow plug.

I pulled the GP Controller and I can't see any burnt components.

If I ground out the relay for 30 or so seconds I still get the same results.

Kicker is once I get the truck started she runs like a champ.

I've replaced glow plugs, GP relay, fuel filter, lift pump, sending unit, soft hoses at fuel pump and lift pump. The truck only started acting up after the lift pump.

I'm perplexed because the pump, and filter isn't leaking, I haven't seen anything on the injectors and once truck is fired up it runs good and will restart if within 10 or so minutes...

Any insight would be awesome. I apologize if this has been covered.

Put a clear line on return line coming off inj pump, will let you know if there is any air infiltration. Bubbles = air getting somwhere you need to find and fix

Check the ohms on all the glow plugs. Lots of bad counterfeit plugs out there now and theyre bad out of the box or fail immediately. I highly reccomend Delco 60g or bosch duraterm from a reputable seller.

Pump could be bad out of the box. I usually do away with mechanical fuel pump and throw an electric close to tank mounted on frame on a switch in the cab. Makes bleeding and other diagnosis a lot easier. Just have to get the correct psi. I use Carter 4070 or an elec pump from a 6.5L. Mech pumps can also fail and let raw fuel enter the crankcase leading to engine failure. Fuel pressure gages before and after filter also help troubleshoot fuel issues

Best of luck and keep us posted

You are going to see this a lot. Do not use starting fluid on a glow plug engine! Unless you totally have the system disabled and are willing to deal with a possible broken engine.

With that written. Your fuel pump replacement should not cause starting issues since you have verified the pump will pump and the engine runs when warmed up. If you hadn’t written about the glow plug system going “bonkers” I would suggest you check out the fuel filter base. The FM80 base has some known failure points where the sensors plug in that can let air into the system. That could still be going on.

However, you have to have glow plugs glowing to start the engine when it is cold. Did you use an eraser to clean the contacts at the end of the glow plug card? You could also get a remote starter switch to “hot wire” the glow plugs bypassing the solenoid and card to isolate heat or fuel as your issue.

I'm going to try to isolate the system tomorrow. It was 73 today. I haven't had the GP controller card in since the glow plug system went crazy. I'll clean the contacts and try again to see if it resolves the wait light. I completely understand the risks involved with ether and glow plugged systems. I appericate the info. I'll let you guys know

Update: no dice. I cleaned the contacts on the glow plug card with an eraser. Same results.

I'm going to start fresh with testing the glow plugs this weekend. I just replaced them 6 weeks ago. If I'm burning thru them that fast then I've got another problem.

The CUCV is gunna have to take a back burner while I pick up a MEP803. Thanks again.
