m1009 quit on me

headed out to run some errands yesterday, truck starts up fine, i let it warm up for 10 minutes or so (very cold out) and then get going. truck seems to be running completely normal, get to the store, leave it idling in the parking lot while i go in (10-15 minutes), come out and the truck is noticeably idling rough. put it in gear and the power is WAY down. had to have the pedal all the way to the floor and it'd barely go over 30mph. As soon as id let off the throttle the whole truck would shake violently. eventually (few miles) the truck just lost all accelerating power, so i had to pull into a gas station and let it shake itself to a stall. i tried starting it again, it would start fine, but had to keep my foot on the throttle to prevent a stall. tried putting it in gear then mashed the pedal to the floor and it would just shake and stall.Got it towed and now i'm here. truck is only a few months old to me, so i dont necessarily know where i'd begin looking. any help would be appreciated.

ive been using the silver bottle of diesel service, not the winter blend, but havent used it in my last few tanks. im more concerned with it being the harmonic balancer and the more i try to run it the more risk i run snapping the crank. I'll try the filter and 911 if you feel strongly about it, though.

I would go with the fuel related issue. It is gelling up and causing uneven firing of the cylinders and making it shutter and vibrate. Not sure it would do that with the harmonic balancer at idle.

easy solution is to get it into a warm building and leave it overnight, then you'll know what's up
If the filter is plugged from waxing a warm building won't help . the filter needs to be changed .

When was the truck last serviced ?

Just add the additive and replace your filter and see what you get.

You should have a spare filter in the truck(at all times).

And you need to use the white bottle(or some brand) of additive every time you fill up.

I did as you said, doghead. i replaced the fuel filter with a brand new one, i put diesel service 911 in the tank and i even took it one step further and cleaned out the return valve on the ip cover with carb cleaner.
When did you change the filter? 3-4 months ago when you got the truck or today?

Possibly a lift pump failure?

If it were me, I would go through the entire fuel system minus the IP. If changing out fuel, hoses, filter, and a lift pump doesn't cure it...most likely you are looking at a reman'd IP I would think.

Do my trucks symptoms point towards a lift pump problem? the whole thing just seems really random. something must've failed.

I think someone with more diesel fuel system knowledge would have to comment. Realistically with something this old, it is a systematic procedure of changing and testing the easiest/cheapest things first before condeming an IP. Lift pump could be perfectly fine, it also could be introducing air into the system. You just never know but for $27, I'd take the gamble. I also would take some known good diesel and run it into the filter housing with a fresh filter to see what it does. That would eliminate the tank, lines, etc. from the equation.

as Skinny said start going through your fuel system step by step, did you dump out the fuel filter to see if you had water in the system? that also means take the filter some where warm in case of ice, lots of noise, but hard to tell from the video, also try playing doctor and get your ears on to see if you can locate the noise better , the video makes a very metallic sound, do the easy stuff first,

You could try running a hose from the IP inlet into a jug of clean diesel and see if it runs. The IP has enough pull to feed itself that way, and would verify if the IP is ok. There is also a test in the TM for the lift pump, pretty much disconnect the IP inlet and put it into a bucket, remove the pink wire from the IP, and crank it over for a given number of seconds and see how much fuel the lift pump puts out.

had the dealership look at it today just for kicks, they had no idea whats wrong with it. guess ill do my best.
