I won my second M1009 a few weeks ago on this auction out of Ft Riley...

2320 - Trucks & Truck Tractors, Wheeled at Government Liquidation

I got my EUC processed in two weeks and made my appointment. Ft Riley is 500 miles one way from my home here in Denver.

I drove my M1028A2 out. NO problems. Though several stops did occur. I generally stop when I see someone on the side of the road. Two of the stops proved to be A-OK not needing my help.

The THIRD one was very strange. We were rolling east on I-70 and we come across a small white SUV stopped on the left shoulder POINTED WEST. The car is barely sticking out in the lane. WORST YET, the guy is OUT of his vehicle and kind of 'wandering' in the left lane of the east bound I-70. He was completely incoherent. The vehicle was running with keys in the ignition.

At first I thought he might have been drunk, but there was ZERO alcohol on him, in his vehicle (I looked) and he did not smell of booze. He was consistently nice. But he could only tell me he left from 'somewhere near Houston'. He did not know his own name. He did not know where he was going. He did not know where he lived.

I called my wife and had her call the Hays, KS highway patrol office who sent someone right out. I moved the guys car over to the right hand side shoulder, facing east and managed to keep the guy in the passenger seat until the officer showed up. He concurred the guy did not appear drunk. I suggested either heat exhaustion or perhaps a mild heat stroke. Left the guy in the officers hands, who had an ambulance enroute.

So, off we go and get to Manhattan, KS later that evening.

My appointment was at 9am. I was signed in at 9:01am, I signed out at 9:30am.

The trip home was less exciting than the trip out, as there were no people broken down on the side of the road.

SteelandCanvas loaned me his medium tow bar. IT WORKED GREAT. The wife has already approved that purchase.

THANK YOU JOHNATHAN for the use of your tow bar. It is SWEET. No, I did not injure it. It's really nice.

CrashAF, thank you for your suggestions about the flipping one of the feet to get it to fit and allow the pin to fit in and get the locking pin in place. Great suggestion and it worked very well. OH, loved the 'use a jack stand' to hold the tow bar up in place as I backed in place. As it turned out, I backed right up to it, hooked the tow bar right up and off we went. Again, thanks.

RandyLBarnes, GREAT TIP on keeping the ignition unlocked. Yeah, I did disconnect the batteries. She towed dead bang straight and smooth as a baby's butt.

Oh, I saw AT LEAST two sections that were twenty deuces long, five deuces deep. I asked and the GL guy said, yes they were going to go up for sale. They were almost ALL painted desert tan. None in this group were uparmored that I saw. We saw those going INTO GL and they had not been transferred over to them yet. But they will have a bundle of them coming up.

As I was leaving I saw a smaller group of deuces that WERE uparmored and because I had already left, I could NOT ask that question again. I would imagine the armor would be removed prior to selling the vehicles.

Oh, and IN the GL lot there was a sweet row of five tons. Not sure if they have already gone up for sale or not, but dang man, THEY LOOKED NICE. And way over on the back side of their lot was one of the machine shop five tons that looked in pretty good shape. Not sure when or even IF these will come up for sale, BUT they did look great.

That is a nice looking truck. The 1028A2 is even nicer. WOW. They do tow like a dream. You didn't mention it but did you disco the rear drive shaft on the Oh-9? I've heard of them doing damage on long journeys. Congrats brother!

Nope. Just unlocked the steering column and put the transfer case in NEUTRAL and the front hubs to free and away we went.

Did NOT have a problem what so ever. And I have had an M1009 that was flat towed from Georgia in the exact same manner. RUNS GREAT.

I did get the truck to start. Runs fairly strong. SEEMS that the tranny may have issues. It's a little low on fluid, which I plan to top off, but it should run well even a quart low, which it is not. Just not topped off. But the tranny doesn't go into a gear when you shift it.

So, if I have to rebuild the tranny and end up with an additional $1000 in the truck I think this is going to be as nice a truck as my M1028A2 is. It currently has approximately 18k miles on it.

OK, SCRATCH THAT.

DUMB DUMB (me) forgot to put the transfer case back into 2WD. WORKS GREAT. Brakes, turn signals, power steering, tranny, EVERYTHING SEEMS PERFECT.

And it has a full tank of fuel. I'm getting ready to add some additive to the engine after changing the oil, additive in the tranny and additive in the fuel system. Plus Purple Ice to keep the radiator kewl.

Our 1009's are cousin, same unit, truck #103. I picked up mine a couple of weeks ago. Runs great but came without spare, seems like all of them had their spares pulled. After I cleaned the fuse block it has been running like a top. Been driving it every day back and forth to Topeka for the MVPA convention. Only had 3/4 of a tank in mine! Nice score, as my dad used to say,"you boys did good".
Those five tons are still in the open scan area for any gov't agency to snag. The up armored trucks have been there for several years now they are in the reset lot to be surplussed or rebuilt.

Glad your return trip was uneventful. Looks like a nice Blazer!

The guy you ran into on your way out was probably a diabetic with low blood sugar. They'll often act drunk without a drop in their system. Hopefully he got medical attention quick... if they continue to drop they can go comatose.

Both I and the State Patrol guy agreed he was NOT drunk. There was no smell, no bottles in the car at all (yeah he COULD have pitched them), and he just acted confused.

Once the State Patrol arrived, I talked with him for a couple of minutes as I handed him the guys ID and his car keys.

He had an ambulance enroute, which probably arrived in the next five minutes. We were NOT that far out of Hays, so hopefully the guy is OK.

Other than THAT, pretty uneventful trip.
