As much as I'm not a huge fan of dealing with them (slow to ship), Federal Military Parts has precut glass available. That's who I used to recently replace mine.

Hi everyone,

I need some help figuring out my batteries connections. The hummwv didn’t come with batteries.
I have 4 connectors (circled in color in picture below).

My understanding
1 (blue) rear battery negative
4 (red) front battery positive

Am I right so far?

Connector 2(green) and 3(yellow) are part of the same cable. My issue is connector 2 (green) has a couple of yellow labeled wires attached to it. Those wires are connected to the block on the side of the battery compartment.

On which terminal of which battery do I connect connector 2(green) and 3(yellow)?

What are those yellow labelled wires for?

One of the yellow wires is for 12V transmission (TCM) feed the other goes to the 14V tap on the voltage regulator to balance the voltage on the two batteries
1 is neg, 4 is 24V positive.
3 is the cable that goes between the two batteries.
What batteries are you going to use?
There also should be a battery diagram plate there somewhere.

First of all thank you!

3 is the cable that goes between the two batteries.
So it doesn’t matter if I connect 2 to rear battery positive terminal and 3 to front battery negative or vice versa?

What batteries are you going to use?
2 Group 65 batteries for now.

It should be clear, the pos terminal is larger than the neg terminal so the connectors should give you a clue but as far as practical application it does not matter

- zero power steering (can only turn when truck is moving and only when using excessive steering force)
- hard / violent shacking brake pedals
- whining and grinding when steering

My plan:
- check power steering fluid level
- add fluid if necessary
- bleed if necessary

Questions:
- Recommended fluid is Dexron ll or lll . Is that correct? Does it matter which one I use?
- Anything else I should be checking regarding the above issue?
- I am using TM 9-2320-280-10 and TM-9-2320-280-20-2. Are those the correct ones for a M1097A2?

I do not mean to sound condescending but you should have changed ALL fluids and filters before ever trying to start your truck.
Driving without doing that could cost you BIG bucks
Use DEX III in the steering and transfer case, DEXIII or VI in the trans.
EDIT, that is the very first thing I do with every truck I get before ever putting batteries in it, the only exception is if the trans fluid looks OK I will try and start it and maybe go for a short test drive, only because I always replace the pan so there is some expense there.

You are not being condescending and you are definitely right. That was my plan. Unfortunately, the truck was delivered while I was deployed and they parked it blocking the driveway. I needed to move it. It hasn’t left the driveway since. Now I’m tackling the basic.

Meanwhile while doing my inspection, I came across this burnt electrical wire.

Power steering reservoir is full. Power steering lines from reservoir to pump were all wet, including pump. I cleaned / degreased them to see where the leak is located. Will let it sit and check tomorrow.

2- Any suggestions?

There is a little metal tag on the wire the burned part is connected to in your picture. The number on the wire tag will tell you what that wire does.

That looks like a diode or "suppressor" I think they call it, they put them inline with inductive devices like the run and cold start solenoids and the horn circuit to help keep from frying things like the EESS box with my favorite evil, Reverse Electromotive Force.

What is the wire tag number that the device is plugged into (right above the IP in the picture), also the other end should be plugged into another wire or something

It plugs into wire 54c. Initial digging shows it´s there for communication radio noise elimination. My guess is that it burned due to shorting of the leftover radio wiring cut during demil (pic below).
